[2007.05.09 19:07:43] StudioFloor13: Premium is awesome...I looked at one of my old basic shops last night and thought, it's time to take this baby to premium!
[2007.05.09 19:07:51] SamCP: Some of you have answered this already. Does everyone here own a basic shop? How many people here have a premium shop already?
[2007.05.09 19:08:22] DafnaCP: Better question: how many people only have basic shops?
[2007.05.09 19:08:33] ThE_RiPPeR has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.09 19:09:15] Erinn: 2 premiums
[2007.05.09 19:09:17] sofie: i do
[2007.05.09 19:09:19] Cyido: I started out with premium & love it.
[2007.05.09 19:09:31] champgoof: I have only basic at the moment :(
[2007.05.09 19:09:31] DafnaCP: cool, this will be a good chat for you then
[2007.05.09 19:09:50] Timewarp: i had a bunch of basic shops linked by a nice external site but going premium increased my sales immediately.
[2007.05.09 19:09:58] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:10:04] DafnaCP: yeah, going premium tends to do that
[2007.05.09 19:10:19] SamCP: Before we move on, let me just say that we find that premium shops sell much better than basic shops. As you have heard already from some folks here. If anyone here would like to contact me about upgrading their basic shop to premium, just shoot me an email at slevine@cafepress.com.
[2007.05.09 19:11:25] cash-friendly has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.09 19:11:33] champgoof: k noted and thank you for the offer sam :D
[2007.05.09 19:11:34] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:11:42] SamCP: Ok, with that said let’s go over the main benefits of upgrading to a premium shop.
[2007.05.09 19:12:21] SamCP: With a premium shop you have the ability to customize your shop appearance using HTML. That said, if you don’t know HTML, don’t worry, we have custom templates available that you can implement quickly and easily in order to give your shop a professional appearance.
[2007.05.09 19:12:30] SamCP: Here is a link to some example templates:

http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/shops/premium3
[2007.05.09 19:12:38] DafnaCP: We also have the nifty colors and fonts area where you can choose the colors and fonts for a semi-custom look.
[2007.05.09 19:13:01] SamCP: In addition, you can add an unlimited amount of products and designs to your shop; giving your customers options. This is unlike a basic shop where you can only add one of each product all on one page.
[2007.05.09 19:13:17] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:13:29] shopaholicchick: you can completely customize premium shops - without using the template
[2007.05.09 19:13:53] SamCP: Yes you can Shopaholicchick

[2007.05.09 19:14:32] champgoof: ohhh now the ideas are starting to spin ha!
[2007.05.09 19:14:41] shopaholicchick: and it does not take a lot of HTML knowledge to create your custom page
[2007.05.09 19:14:55] cash-friendly: a question about templates...if a SK switches a template, but then changes his/her mind, why can't they go back? I've noticed that the previously chosen template vanishes.
[2007.05.09 19:14:55] SamCP: Hey Cash-Friendly - yes, unfortunately we do not have an option to turnback changes. You will have to re-implement the template you were using.
[2007.05.09 19:15:21] StudioFloor13: champ - premium shops are addictive, because they're SO much fun!
[2007.05.09 19:15:33] SamCP: You can also create sections/pages that allow you to scale your shop and make it easy for your customers to navigate. And not just pages for designs and products, you can get clever and add sections to your shop about you and your cause (which is great for SEO – Search Engine Optimization).
[2007.05.09 19:15:55] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:16:05] champgoof: May I ask if search engines pick up the premuim over the basic first?
[2007.05.09 19:16:05] SamCP: With a premium shop there are multilevels and more pages that you can add content to, to be indexed.
[2007.05.09 19:16:28] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:16:32] champgoof: k makes sense thank you Sam
[2007.05.09 19:16:41] shopaholicchick: champ premiums get picked up faster because they have more pages and more text -
[2007.05.09 19:16:55] cash-friendly: how, then, please?
[2007.05.09 19:16:55] SamCP: When it comes to premium shops, building your sections is made easy and quick. You can use our section builder to make changes to several items at once and/or use default settings like pricing and product naming.
[2007.05.09 19:17:27] SamCP: cash-friendly, do you mean how do you re-implement the template?
[2007.05.09 19:18:03] sofie: by saving a copy of it all before you make any changes. most of us learned that the hard way. ;-)
[2007.05.09 19:18:26] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:18:27] UncleFrog: the section default setting are rather important for making additions of new CP products available in one's premium store much, much more easily
[2007.05.09 19:18:48] Erinn has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.09 19:18:51] sofie: there are products like surfoffline tha will help with that. or you can go to each page and do "File > Save As"
[2007.05.09 19:18:53] cash-friendly: ok, thanks sofie
[2007.05.09 19:19:05] shopaholicchick: cash - you can if you go to the html page and save everything from each box - then if you want to go back just paste it back in
[2007.05.09 19:19:09] cash-friendly: when I asked "how, then, please?" I was referring to "how do you re-implement the templates into your premium shop?"
[2007.05.09 19:19:09] SamCP: You just go in an choose the one you had before, which is basically like choosing it for the first time. Does that make sense. Choosing a new template, wether you have used it before or not will over write what you had before.
[2007.05.09 19:19:22] SamCP: You can also use our import feature which creates a copy of a product(s) that you can then change using the section builder. Importing is especially great at saving you steps and time; you can import products that are priced and set up generally the way you like them so all you have to do is change the images, name and description.
[2007.05.09 19:20:00] SamCP: Does any one here use the import feature to set up their sections?
[2007.05.09 19:20:20] sofie: me!
[2007.05.09 19:20:28] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:20:35] sofie: import = HUGE time saver.
[2007.05.09 19:20:35] DafnaCP: yup!
[2007.05.09 19:20:39] Cyido: Yes, it saves a ton of time with resizing.
[2007.05.09 19:20:45] cash-friendly: I've tried that, Sam, and the old template vanishes each and every time (I've switched templates 3 times before stopping and running out of choices)
[2007.05.09 19:20:45] SamCP: Meaning you are not happy with what is available, or you are just having trouble implementing a template?
[2007.05.09 19:20:55] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:21:01] SamCP: Agreed Sophie. I always use it when I set up new sections!
[2007.05.09 19:21:06] MADAWG has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.09 19:21:16] cash-friendly: I have (used the import feature) GREAT for reorganizing a shop and highlighting new products and/or current themes!
[2007.05.09 19:21:45] UncleFrog: For me, importing sections and making bulk changes is the #1 feature for premium stores. Not having to resize images on products or reprice items saves an incredible amount of time.

[2007.05.09 19:23:05] champgoof: do you mean template on as the html template?
[2007.05.09 19:23:05] SamCP: Hey Champgoof, I am talking about premium shop templates. Hopefully I did not confuse what you were talking about. Can you confirm?
[2007.05.09 19:23:43] sofie: unclefrog: exactly! could not agree more. what used to take hours upon hours now only takes minutes!
[2007.05.09 19:23:52] champgoof: its ok I am back on track :D ty sam
[2007.05.09 19:23:55] garyoa1: But importing changes the product numbers (while move doesn't) so I've never really used it to re-arrange. Seems kind of dangerous SEO wise.
[2007.05.09 19:23:55] SamCP: Right. I would not use it usually for re-arranging. It is best for creating new sections.
[2007.05.09 19:24:19] cash-friendly: Sam: I was unhappy with what I chosen and thought I'd switch back, but when I wanted to, the old template vanished from the list. Maybe I can email you about my problem so that this topic doesn't hog your discussion time.
[2007.05.09 19:24:19] SamCP: Sure. Just shoot me an email after the chat,.
[2007.05.09 19:24:26] DafnaCP: Good thinking garyoa1, that's true
[2007.05.09 19:24:52] sofie: aaaaaah, garyoa1: that would explain the drastic drop off in my sales when I redesigned my shop!! gah!
[2007.05.09 19:25:00] SamCP: So on to some of the things you should be thinking about when you start setting up your premium shop.
[2007.05.09 19:25:18] SamCP: Organizing your premium shop is very important. By taking some time to think this through you can come up with a game plan to make setting up quick and easy for yourself.
[2007.05.09 19:25:33] garyoa1: Don't applaud, just throw quarters. ;)
[2007.05.09 19:25:34] SamCP: Here is an article about premium shop organization:
http://www.cafepress.com/cp/community/shop_organization
[2007.05.09 19:25:45] SamCP: And here is a cheat sheet that is especially helpful when you open your premium shop: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/services/cheat_sheet
[2007.05.09 19:25:53] DafnaCP: Simply put, your shop should be visually appealing and easily navigable.
[2007.05.09 19:26:18] SamCP: LOL @ Garyoa1 - I have a quarter here that I am throwing at the screen.
[2007.05.09 19:26:50] cash-friendly: throw garyoa quarters...throw me my per/item markup! LOL
[2007.05.09 19:26:52] champgoof: Pss Garoa woudl canadian quarters work?
[2007.05.09 19:27:04] garyoa1: Great. You cracked my screen. :( I have much sadness now.
[2007.05.09 19:27:16] garyoa1: Hey, I'm in Canada
[2007.05.09 19:27:24] Cyido has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.09 19:27:29] sofie: i'm curious about that comment back there, though, about "default section settings" for new products. Wondering if I'm misunderstanding or if there is some feature I've been unaware of that will add new prods to my sections as they come available?
[2007.05.09 19:27:29] SamCP: Yes, there is a section info page that allows you to set default inforamtion like product name, product descriptions, prices and other things.
[2007.05.09 19:28:09] karen has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.09 19:28:21] champgoof: im premium you dont have to resize the image ??? ohh:whistle:
[2007.05.09 19:28:21] SamCP: You can use the import and import a product with an image sized to a specific height already. If you put an image that is the same size or bigger on the product it will retain the size information that you had previously selected.
[2007.05.09 19:28:25] SamCP: Thus saving you some time.
[2007.05.09 19:28:42] champgoof: Does the orginazation link show a preview of different options avaibale so that I can create my plan of attach design wise?
[2007.05.09 19:28:42] SamCP: It does show some examples.
[2007.05.09 19:29:06] SamCP: You should also be thinking about the theme of your shop. Deciding on a theme or “niche” will help you choose the products you should offer and will help you choose the keywords and tags that you will need for SEO purposes and the CafePress Marketplace.
[2007.05.09 19:30:34] sofie: meaning you only need about THREE images where before I would create fifteen!
[2007.05.09 19:30:34] SamCP: You should still create images at specific sizes when necessary for items that have a full bleed. An image that you might use on a t-shirt will not necessarily work the same, or look as nice on the clock.
[2007.05.09 19:30:41] SamCP: Is everyone here familiar with SEO?
[2007.05.09 19:31:15] MaxMuhlin has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.09 19:31:28] StudioFloor13: Re. SEO - yes, but I still need lots of help with it.
[2007.05.09 19:31:42] DafnaCP: it's complex, always room for improvement
[2007.05.09 19:31:48] champgoof: so what are the other advantages?
[2007.05.09 19:31:48] SamCP: Hey Champgoof - we did go over the main benefits. The abiltiy to customize and unlimited products. But you can see more about the differences here: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/shops/premium2
[2007.05.09 19:31:51] cash-friendly: I'm familiar with SEO...just not sure SEO is familiar with me, given my latest sales reports... :(
[2007.05.09 19:32:04] SamCP: SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A number of factors are important when optimizing a website, including the content and structure of the website's copy and page layout and the HTML meta-tags.
[2007.05.09 19:32:27] StudioFloor13: definitely...and with technology changing so darned fast, there's always more to learn.
[2007.05.09 19:32:30] UncleFrog: About "default section settings" - After CP added the last wave of items (before maternity) I found I had skipped entering that information because I thought I'd never add to that section again. Adding the new maternity products and future additions to the product line will be MUCH easier now that I've taken the time to in fill the default settings.
[2007.05.09 19:32:30] SamCP: Great point!
[2007.05.09 19:32:49] SamCP: Here is a great tool that you can use to help you figure out what keywords you should use and what kind of searches are being made on those keywords:
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

[2007.05.09 19:33:25] SamCP: And here is a link to our Search Engine Optimization tutorial:
http://www.cafepress.com/cp/learn/tutorial_seo
[2007.05.09 19:33:33] champgoof: so SEO is my enemy.. I didnt know it had a name ( altough I guessed it did LOL)
[2007.05.09 19:33:45] SamCP: Once you have figured out what your keywords should be, we recommend filling out all the content areas such as your store description, meta-tags (found on the Shop Info page), section descriptions, section teasers, section names, product names, etc. Anywhere there's content.
[2007.05.09 19:33:46] maryo: And have lots of keyword rich text for the search engines to pick up
[2007.05.09 19:34:00] SamCP: Yes Maryo!
[2007.05.09 19:34:11] BrittaCP: nooo... champ. SEO is your friend
[2007.05.09 19:34:30] DafnaCP: When you’re doing the teasers and descriptions, take the quality over quantity approach. You want to get good keywords in there but you don’t want to clutter your page up with text that will detract visually from the overall look of your store.
[2007.05.09 19:35:24] SamCP: Here is an example of a shopkeeper using one of our premium shop templates, who is doing a great job of optimizing his shop with keywords for search engines: http://www.cafepress.com/monstermachine
[2007.05.09 19:35:37] champgoof: LOL@britta not mine and neither is froogle lol
[2007.05.09 19:35:38] BrittaCP: @champ, nurture it and give it lots of attention... you'll get alog great
[2007.05.09 19:35:47] SamCP: Does anyone want to share some examples of how they are optimizing their shops, sections or products?
[2007.05.09 19:36:52] champgoof: k ty britta I,ll try to remeber that and take my patiebce :D
[2007.05.09 19:36:53] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:36:55] BrittaCP: i'll hold you to it!
[2007.05.09 19:37:03] cash-friendly: question: is it helpful describe not only the design on the products for SEo, but also get specific in terms of the product itself?...meaning, in a section, for instance, there could be 10 designs on 25 products each... which would mean 250 different descriptions (product-focused/design-geared)?
[2007.05.09 19:37:03] DafnaCP: yes, you should talk about the products as well. There is always a good balance. I would focus on best sellers when drilling down.
[2007.05.09 19:37:29] DafnaCP: product descriptions are good for this
[2007.05.09 19:37:35] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:37:41] UncleFrog: For SEO you say quality over quantity. I understand, but optimally is it quality AND quatity you seek?
[2007.05.09 19:37:41] SamCP: You should have a balance. You want the SEO to make sense to your customers, but work for search engines.
[2007.05.09 19:37:56] shopaholicchick: www.cafepress.com/shopaholicchick - the i love names sections do well in seo
[2007.05.09 19:38:34] StudioFloor13: Here's an example: After my sales started increasing with my "upside down" license plate frames, I added tag words to my meta tags to drive more traffic to that section: http://www.cafepress.com/studiofloor13/973515 , and I added a link to my storefront as well.
[2007.05.09 19:38:35] shopaholicchick: cash if you put the descriptions on the products rather then just the sections - you do not need to discuss the products
[2007.05.09 19:38:35] DafnaCP: exactly
[2007.05.09 19:39:20] JamminTs.com has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.09 19:39:36] DafnaCP: we've written in the product descriptions already
[2007.05.09 19:39:41] cash-friendly: ok, shop, ty
[2007.05.09 19:39:47] SamCP: This goes for all shops, basic and premium, when you are setting up your shop make sure to fill in tags for your images.
[2007.05.09 19:40:01] SamCP: Has everyone here tagged their images?
[2007.05.09 19:40:15] sofie: tagged to the max! :-)
[2007.05.09 19:40:18] champgoof: I have tags , product description product name

[2007.05.09 19:40:51] champgoof: yup I agree with sophie ( which by the wya my real name is sophie to!) Ihave tagged to the max I went quantity over quality I think
[2007.05.09 19:40:56] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:41:00] JamminTs.com: Wow Max!
[2007.05.09 19:41:03] DafnaCP: so does everyone understand the difference between what the tags do and what the text on your page (SEO) does?
[2007.05.09 19:41:21] cash-friendly: et tu tagge!
[2007.05.09 19:41:29] PeskiPix has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.09 19:41:39] SamCP: For those who don't. Tags are keywords you assign to your images that help customers find your products in the CafePress Marketplace. Tags can be words that describe the image subject matter, theme, concept, creation method, colors, text and more.

[2007.05.09 19:42:06] UncleFrog: Another benefit of Premium Stores is the ability to get some keyword tracking information. Once we see what keywords are bringing in current traffic, we can (a) tweak the keywords used, and (b) make designs we think people using those keywords would like even better. With only basic stores, one wouldn't have the ability to get that information.
[2007.05.09 19:42:11] cash-friendly: I have no idea what I just said LOL!
[2007.05.09 19:42:36] SamCP: And you can add a free statcounter so that you can look at your traffic information.

[2007.05.09 19:43:56] cash-friendly: agress with shop
[2007.05.09 19:44:06] MaxMuhlin: I like the information I get from the Google Webmaster Tools
[2007.05.09 19:44:06] champgoof: mais oui cash je tag :D DAFNA, are they not both picked up by search engines?
[2007.05.09 19:44:06] DafnaCP: champ, tags are not picked up by the search engines, they are strictly for the marketplace

[2007.05.09 19:44:16] shopaholicchick: you can also use google analytics - but that stopped working for me:(

[2007.05.09 19:45:24] champgoof: oh wow thank you dafna I didnt know tags were onyl for the marketplace
[2007.05.09 19:45:24] DafnaCP: welcome
[2007.05.09 19:45:33] cash-friendly: wait a minute...I thought the whole point of tagging was FOR the search engines, not just the marketplace! &$^%$*$*&!!! this explains a LOT!

[2007.05.09 19:46:18] sofie: me too, champ. Thought they worked for both. Too funny that I know a lot about some CP stuff...and zilch about others.
[2007.05.09 19:46:18] SamCP: Tags are for the Marketplace. SEO is for other search engines.
[2007.05.09 19:46:41] cash-friendly: want me to share briefly?
[2007.05.09 19:46:41] SamCP: Sure.
[2007.05.09 19:46:43] UncleFrog: (it's those little "ah-ha!" moments that makes these chats worthwhile)

[2007.05.09 19:46:49] sofie: hahaha cash. me too.
[2007.05.09 19:47:09] shopaholicchick: cash tagging refers to when you upload the image you tag it - that puts it in the marketplace - the marketplace is in search engines - if you want your shop in the search engines seperatly you need to have good descriptions for SEO

[2007.05.09 19:49:23] StudioFloor13: this might be off-subject, but if you have 1 premium & a basic then go prem with the basic, can you import from the prem into the new prem?
[2007.05.09 19:49:23] DafnaCP: studio - you can import from one premium shop to another premium shop, yes.
[2007.05.09 19:49:31] janelle: Cash, it's a learning curve most of us go thru, don't worry.:)be happy

[2007.05.09 19:50:09] SamCP: Once your premium shop is set up, start promoting it. Tell your friends and family about it! Shameless self promotion is so the way to go to get started!
[2007.05.09 19:50:16] shopaholicchick: yes studio - i actually use a basic shop to import from the basic into my prmium shop - because the basic shop remains on the left column and is easier to find

[2007.05.09 19:51:25] UncleFrog: If anyone thinks they are going to ever know it ALL, think again. So we are all still learning. And therefore, to some degree, we are all "waisting" some time. But it does keep getting better and better.
[2007.05.09 19:51:26] StudioFloor13: Dafna - thanks! I was hoping to hear that! Is it best to "move" the sections rather than import? Seems to be a lot of controversy over having multiple (identical) products/designs....did that make sense?
[2007.05.09 19:51:53] SamCP: Import when you want to creat something new.
[2007.05.09 19:52:01] shopaholicchick: the forums are great fo getting help also
[2007.05.09 19:52:02] BrittaCP: yes.... the forums are a great place for peer-to-peer learning. you've got shopkeepres at all levels and passions
[2007.05.09 19:52:11] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:52:12] SamCP: if you are re-arranging then move the products so that the product numbers stay the same.
[2007.05.09 19:52:31] SamCP: Note - you can not move sections or products from one shop to another.
[2007.05.09 19:52:41] SamCP: The forums are fab!
[2007.05.09 19:52:45] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.09 19:53:15] DafnaCP: the issue with multiple products/designs is that you have the same design showing up in the marketplace twice which can result in some buyers clicking one and others clicking the other and so you don't rack up the popularity points as fast

[2007.05.09 19:53:36] SamCP: We are getting close to 5 so I wanted to see if anyone has an questions?

[2007.05.09 19:53:41] SamCP: Hey Karen -
[2007.05.09 19:53:45] champgoof: good point dafna. that is something to think about
[2007.05.09 19:53:53] SamCP: I am not sure it is one the list. But I will pass it on as a suggestion.
[2007.05.09 19:54:05] karen: thanks

[2007.05.09 19:54:10] sofie: but can you copy from one to another? I'm considering a second premium shop for different organizational purposes and don't want to do it if I can't duplicate/copy/import
[2007.05.09 19:54:10] SamCP: Yes you can Sofie.
[2007.05.09 19:54:42] StudioFloor13: Dafna - so it doesn't necessarily constitue spamming in the search engines?
[2007.05.09 19:54:42] DafnaCP: I wouldn't call it spamming, I would call it silly or not really helpful. Spamming is more like tagging images with irrelevant tags
[2007.05.09 19:54:50] cash-friendly: Sam, I'll need your email before you leave...you can PM it to me

[2007.05.09 19:59:25] shopaholicchick: cash please hang around after the official chat int he lobby and i will help you out as much as you need
[2007.05.09 19:59:29] cash-friendly: in SWC (the book), the author recommends writing out full sentence descrtiptions (this is for tagging). Then, wittle it down to the bare essentials--remove the punctuation, of course, as well as the "and"s, "of"s, etc. then, anything that really doesn't describe the essential design and product...and viola! you have great tags! (and maybe SEO, too)
[2007.05.09 19:59:44] shopaholicchick: dafna & sam thank you - if anyone still needs help please come into the lobby - you may need to close chat and reopen it to get into the lobby - there are severl shopkeeper there who will help with SEO tagging and other questions!!

[2007.05.09 19:59:56] DafnaCP: wow, that's a cool technique!
