[2007.05.29 19:07:31] LeslieCP: hello?
[2007.05.29 19:07:43] Gandalf_Parker: hi
[2007.05.29 19:07:45] LeslieCP: ok, i guess this chat is moderated
[2007.05.29 19:07:47] SDDogRescue: *waves hello*
[2007.05.29 19:07:49] spiritstore: Hello Leslie! Thank you for hosting!
[2007.05.29 19:07:50] LeslieCP: so i'm going to go ahead
[2007.05.29 19:07:54] LeslieCP: no problem spiritstore
[2007.05.29 19:08:03] chm has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:08:07] LeslieCP: mm k, so some of you know me as the girl with the crazy hair in charge of the top shopkeeper program
[2007.05.29 19:08:12] LeslieCP: some of you don't know me at all
[2007.05.29 19:08:18] SDDogRescue: looking forward to this one!
[2007.05.29 19:08:26] LeslieCP: for those who don't, i am in fact the girl with the crazy hair in charge of the top shopkeeper program
[2007.05.29 19:08:34] LeslieCP: i am also however an officer of a pit bull rescue
[2007.05.29 19:08:40] Shannon (hazeleyes7): I was thinking more along "dog lady" then crazy hair ;)
[2007.05.29 19:08:43] LeslieCP: which i did before my job here at CP
[2007.05.29 19:08:53] LeslieCP: LOL - yes, crazy dog lady for sure
[2007.05.29 19:09:05] LeslieCP: so my rescue uses CP (and did before i worked here)
[2007.05.29 19:09:16] LeslieCP: and i've worked with a lot of big nonprofits as well
[2007.05.29 19:09:20] LeslieCP: PETA, NORML, etc
[2007.05.29 19:09:21] AngelaCP has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:09:35] LeslieCP: so: overall, there's a few ways to use your shop if you're a nonprofit
[2007.05.29 19:09:40] LeslieCP: 1) fundraising
[2007.05.29 19:09:46] LeslieCP: 2) donor gifting
[2007.05.29 19:09:49] LeslieCP: 3) marketing
[2007.05.29 19:09:56] LeslieCP: 4) all of the above!
[2007.05.29 19:09:58] LeslieCP: :)
[2007.05.29 19:10:07] LeslieCP: one thing to remember on #2
[2007.05.29 19:10:14] LeslieCP: donors overall love to be recognized
[2007.05.29 19:10:26] SDDogRescue: raising awareness (is that marketing?)
[2007.05.29 19:10:26] LeslieCP: yes, sddog
[2007.05.29 19:10:34] spiritstore: Yes they do!
[2007.05.29 19:10:37] LeslieCP: raising awareness as to your orgor as to an issue
[2007.05.29 19:10:42] LeslieCP: but i'm going to start with donors
[2007.05.29 19:10:47] LeslieCP: because it's the simplest
[2007.05.29 19:10:51] LeslieCP: donors give us money
[2007.05.29 19:10:52] LeslieCP: we like them
[2007.05.29 19:11:00] SDDogRescue: YAY!
[2007.05.29 19:11:03] LeslieCP: they like to be recognized and to feel good about their contributions
[2007.05.29 19:11:16] LeslieCP: what i like to do is send occasional gifts from our shop to our bigger donors
[2007.05.29 19:11:28] LeslieCP: because of the flexibility of the model, you can in fact send one-offs
[2007.05.29 19:11:35] LeslieCP: i.e. for a dog rescue
[2007.05.29 19:11:37] SFFriar has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:11:39] LeslieCP: you can do the whole sally struthers thing
[2007.05.29 19:11:46] Shannon (hazeleyes7): I know I feel great when I give 10% of my profits from all my shops to non-profits :D
[2007.05.29 19:11:47] LeslieCP: i.e. start a "sponsor a dog" program
[2007.05.29 19:11:52] michigal has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:12:06] LeslieCP: and then send donors that sponsor a specific dog for $x a present with a pic of that particular dog on it
[2007.05.29 19:12:30] LeslieCP: this is a nice underpinning to a fundraising program and a nice thing for your donors in general
[2007.05.29 19:12:42] Karma Nova has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:12:53] LeslieCP: plus, when you hand out your own stuff, your supporters will raise awareness by wearing/using the stuff
[2007.05.29 19:13:05] LeslieCP: remember that we have bulk discounts
[2007.05.29 19:13:16] LeslieCP: so 35% off and you can batch-reward donors
[2007.05.29 19:13:20] LeslieCP: same goes for volunteers
[2007.05.29 19:13:25] LeslieCP: my volunteers LOVE our stuff
[2007.05.29 19:13:33] LeslieCP: and they all work for free (so do i, harumph)
[2007.05.29 19:13:46] LeslieCP: so when folks are going above and beyond, sometimes i'll go ahead and send them a shirt as a thank-you
[2007.05.29 19:13:55] LeslieCP: it's a pretty cheap way to make someone feel really special and singled out
[2007.05.29 19:14:12] LeslieCP: the other thing some people like to do is clone a shop and make up an esoteric shop ID
[2007.05.29 19:14:15] LeslieCP: keeping things at base price
[2007.05.29 19:14:24] LeslieCP: to allow their volunteers to shop for free
[2007.05.29 19:14:38] LeslieCP: i personally don't do that, because our shop is a fundraiser first and a marketing vehicle second
[2007.05.29 19:14:46] LeslieCP: but it depends on what your shop purpose is
[2007.05.29 19:14:50] kippy has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:14:55] LeslieCP: BTW, for the purpose of this chat "we" means "me and my rescue"
[2007.05.29 19:15:04] LeslieCP: i'm going to speak as a nonprofit person running a CP shop today
[2007.05.29 19:15:12] LeslieCP: so no questions about black t-shirts or whatever! lol
[2007.05.29 19:15:25] LeslieCP: (that used to be the most popular ?, we don't have a standout anymore)
[2007.05.29 19:15:30] Gandalf_Parker: 5) recognition
[2007.05.29 19:15:30] LeslieCP: yes
[2007.05.29 19:15:46] Shannon (hazeleyes7): So what you are describing is working directly through the non-profit in order to contact these donors, correct?
[2007.05.29 19:15:46] LeslieCP: nope
[2007.05.29 19:15:54] LeslieCP: and yes
[2007.05.29 19:15:57] LeslieCP: it depends LOL
[2007.05.29 19:16:02] LeslieCP: in my case, i have my own donor list
[2007.05.29 19:16:21] LeslieCP: if you're working with a nonprofit, you can suggest this kind of gifting and work with them to get personalized gifst
[2007.05.29 19:16:22] RP2008 has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:16:31] LeslieCP: and/or get a bulk/batch order of donor or volunteer gifts
[2007.05.29 19:16:37] Aaron: I had difficulty doing something for a Cub Scout troop I'm involved with. Image got flagged, even though the design was specific to our troop.
[2007.05.29 19:16:37] LeslieCP: that is very strange
[2007.05.29 19:16:53] LeslieCP: it may have been a boy scout infringement or some such - that's a cup question
[2007.05.29 19:17:00] Shannon (hazeleyes7): So how do you get their contact information in order to send donors information?
[2007.05.29 19:17:00] LeslieCP: you need to get that from the nonprofit
[2007.05.29 19:17:07] BrittaCP: cup@cafepress.com
[2007.05.29 19:17:14] LeslieCP: or you can compare your sales reports to a donor list you might have
[2007.05.29 19:17:30] LeslieCP: now: in general, let's talk about best practices for a nonprofit shop
[2007.05.29 19:17:36] LeslieCP: 1) let people know what the purpose of the shop is
[2007.05.29 19:17:43] LeslieCP: if it's for charity, say so - prominently
[2007.05.29 19:17:57] LeslieCP: here's my rescue's shop: http://www.cafepress.com/badrapstore
[2007.05.29 19:17:59] SDDogRescue: we hand our CP goodies at our yearly volunteer appreciation dinner AND at our yearly fundraiser dinner
[2007.05.29 19:18:12] LeslieCP: that's a great idea SD DOG
[2007.05.29 19:18:18] LeslieCP: my rescue has an annual conference
[2007.05.29 19:18:34] LeslieCP: we make a special design for that conference and sell limited edition shirts at the event itself
[2007.05.29 19:18:45] LeslieCP: we also sell our swag at any other animal care conferences we attend
[2007.05.29 19:18:57] LeslieCP: i.e. we order a bunch of stuff in bulk
[2007.05.29 19:18:59] LeslieCP: bring it, sell it
[2007.05.29 19:19:08] LeslieCP: then we usually gift the volunteers with any leftovers
[2007.05.29 19:19:12] LeslieCP: anyway, back to the shop...
[2007.05.29 19:19:16] LeslieCP: identify the shop
[2007.05.29 19:19:20] LeslieCP: s mission )
[2007.05.29 19:19:24] LeslieCP: ARGH hard return!
[2007.05.29 19:19:33] SDDogRescue: is the paypa on badrap considered a leak to affiliates?
[2007.05.29 19:19:33] LeslieCP: not as far as i know
[2007.05.29 19:19:42] LeslieCP: no shop should get in the way of donations
[2007.05.29 19:20:01] Danhere has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:20:04] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.29 19:20:05] LeslieCP: but i will say that the profile of someone who wants your stuff and the profile of someone who wants to give you money is really different
[2007.05.29 19:20:12] LeslieCP: i wouldn't worry about sales interfering with donations
[2007.05.29 19:20:17] LeslieCP: i just haven't seen it happen
[2007.05.29 19:20:21] SDDogRescue: very true!
[2007.05.29 19:20:24] SFFriar: Leslie, what's your break even point?
[2007.05.29 19:20:24] LeslieCP: what do you mean sffriar?
[2007.05.29 19:20:34] Gandalf_Parker: "protest kits" can be created quickly with bumperstickers, pins, tshirts, aprons, and using posters for distributing made slogans that can be turned into poster signs
[2007.05.29 19:20:34] LeslieCP: that's a great idea gandalf
[2007.05.29 19:20:42] shopaholicchick: affiliate leaks no longer matter since we are no longer CP affiliate - we are CJ affiliates....
[2007.05.29 19:20:42] LeslieCP: ok then
[2007.05.29 19:20:59] LeslieCP: ok, so the second thing about your fundraiser shop is: THINK BEYOND THE LOGO
[2007.05.29 19:21:05] LeslieCP: i will say it again
[2007.05.29 19:21:10] LeslieCP: THINK BEYOND THE LOGO, PEOPLE!
[2007.05.29 19:21:16] LeslieCP: i know you love your logo
[2007.05.29 19:21:17] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.05.29 19:21:29] LeslieCP: but other people don't love it as much as they love what the logo represents
[2007.05.29 19:21:43] SDDogRescue: but other designs will have wider appeal = more sales!
[2007.05.29 19:21:46] LeslieCP: which is to say that no matter how sexy and wonderful your logo is, at the end of the day people are buying gifts and things to wear
[2007.05.29 19:21:50] LeslieCP: they want cool designs
[2007.05.29 19:21:59] LeslieCP: the bad rap shop took off when i started making generalized rad pit bull designs
[2007.05.29 19:22:16] LeslieCP: it's still the same buyers, but now we're picking up more sales and people are making an actual fashion statement
[2007.05.29 19:22:44] LeslieCP: and, since it's a pit bull rescue, the topic has wide appeal
[2007.05.29 19:22:44] karen has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:22:55] michigal has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:22:57] LeslieCP: so we figured that we could pick up some extra sales from people who may not care whether or not we're a rescue
[2007.05.29 19:23:03] LeslieCP: but just want a rad pit bull shirt
[2007.05.29 19:23:24] LeslieCP: and i saw a hole in that market - lots of snarling dogs on chains, not a lot of cute, natural-eared dogs with positive messaging
[2007.05.29 19:23:37] LeslieCP: if your nonprofit has the same opportunity
[2007.05.29 19:23:47] LeslieCP: i.e. to leverage a generalized market interest
[2007.05.29 19:23:49] LeslieCP: go for it!
[2007.05.29 19:23:59] SFFriar: How many Shirts do you have to sell, at a discount to break even with the amount you purchased?
[2007.05.29 19:23:59] LeslieCP: it depends on the shirt and your pricing
[2007.05.29 19:24:04] LeslieCP: i just make sure to price things well
[2007.05.29 19:24:16] LeslieCP: last year at our conference i think i was doing 1 shirt for $20 and 2 for $35
[2007.05.29 19:24:25] LeslieCP: and since we'd gotten a 35% discount people were really going for this
[2007.05.29 19:24:33] LeslieCP: MANY people bought 2
[2007.05.29 19:24:49] LeslieCP: i think i may have even done 5 for 65 or something, and people were doing it
[2007.05.29 19:24:59] shopaholicchick: explain?
[2007.05.29 19:24:59] LeslieCP: explain what?
[2007.05.29 19:25:08] SDDogRescue: pretty much just our volunteers buy our logo wear (for adoption events, etc)
[2007.05.29 19:25:08] LeslieCP: exactly
[2007.05.29 19:25:15] LeslieCP: our volunteers actually don't really buy our logo
[2007.05.29 19:25:23] LeslieCP: what we do is put our URL on all our shirts
[2007.05.29 19:25:47] Aaron: what % is typical markup for a charity site?
[2007.05.29 19:25:47] LeslieCP: it depends, i mark up around 30%
[2007.05.29 19:25:52] LeslieCP: some people make "donation shirts"
[2007.05.29 19:26:00] LeslieCP: so they sell a shirt for like $100\
[2007.05.29 19:26:05] LeslieCP: i did this for hurricane katrina
[2007.05.29 19:26:17] LeslieCP: it worked, but i think those things only seem to work when there is a legitimate crisis
[2007.05.29 19:26:31] Aaron: A small URL would be cool... on a sleeve. Otherwise, I've hidden a URL in designs.
[2007.05.29 19:26:34] LeslieCP: i.e. "Boscoe needs knee surgery, please support us, buy this $100 shirt with a picture of sad sad Boscoe on it"
[2007.05.29 19:26:46] Shannon (hazeleyes7): how do you fit your URL on the shirt and keep it from interferring with the design?
[2007.05.29 19:26:46] LeslieCP: good design... lol
[2007.05.29 19:26:53] LeslieCP: sometimes we put it on the back
[2007.05.29 19:26:59] LeslieCP: other times we just get it below the design
[2007.05.29 19:27:10] spiritstore has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:27:12] RP2008: not sure if this was covered but I missed muich of this chat... Is there something in place now or will there possibly be something in place in the future to allow shop owners to dirrectly forwards cleared funds from stores to a charity?
[2007.05.29 19:27:12] LeslieCP: that is on my wish list
[2007.05.29 19:27:21] Gandalf_Parker: Ive seen shops add as much as $20 to a shirt for a non-profit and call it a "charitable donation with automatic gift"
[2007.05.29 19:27:21] LeslieCP: right
[2007.05.29 19:27:26] spiritstore: Thank you Shannon
[2007.05.29 19:27:32] spiritstore has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:27:36] SDDogRescue: http://www.cafepress.com/sdspanielrescue.64026904
[2007.05.29 19:27:42] Aaron: I had a design for an organization based here in Los Angeles and I put the URL in the base of the L
[2007.05.29 19:27:43] Shannon (hazeleyes7): Thanks - I have been trying to figure out a way to keep it from interferring with the "rescue" message
[2007.05.29 19:27:49] SDDogRescue: (opps, CR - example of URL with design)
[2007.05.29 19:27:51] LeslieCP: so in general, you want to use the same kinds of principles in a nonprofit shop as in a regular shop
[2007.05.29 19:28:01] LeslieCP: launch 5-10 good designs
[2007.05.29 19:28:05] LeslieCP: consider your audience
[2007.05.29 19:28:08] LeslieCP: tag and keyword well
[2007.05.29 19:28:12] LeslieCP: then market away
[2007.05.29 19:28:18] LeslieCP: think about your key messaging
[2007.05.29 19:28:27] LeslieCP: make different designs that appeal to different supporters
[2007.05.29 19:28:37] dreamup has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:28:45] LeslieCP: if you look at the bad rap shop, you'll see REALLY different designs in "urban chic" than you will in "bully love"
[2007.05.29 19:29:02] LeslieCP: we have the hipster hearts and flowers crowd, and we have the macho guys who just want a cool shirt
[2007.05.29 19:29:21] LeslieCP: since this shop pays our vet bills, we appeal to everyone as long as we're not sacrificing our core message
[2007.05.29 19:29:26] SDDogRescue: we also have a "donate to rescue" section - people can choose their level of "donation" and get a rescue bumber sticker (only available with donation) - from $10 to $100 ...
[2007.05.29 19:29:27] LeslieCP: that's a good ide
[2007.05.29 19:29:28] BrittaCP: yes... we'll have one up shortly after
[2007.05.29 19:29:34] spiritstore: Will a transcript of this chat be available after it is over? The chat window was just interrupted when I went to look at one of the Bad Rap shirts so I lost the history.
[2007.05.29 19:29:34] LeslieCP: i dunno - angela?
[2007.05.29 19:29:45] BrittaCP: yes
[2007.05.29 19:29:46] LeslieCP: i do btw have a really important link for you all
[2007.05.29 19:29:50] dreamup has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:30:00] LeslieCP: bookmark it - it's a hidden page that i wrote specifically for nonprofits

[2007.05.29 19:30:29] spiritstore: Wonderful! Hit me!
[2007.05.29 19:30:39] Karma Nova: w00t
[2007.05.29 19:30:42] LeslieCP: And here's one for groups and clubs:
[2007.05.29 19:30:50] LeslieCP: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/services/groups_tips
[2007.05.29 19:30:57] LeslieCP: The difference between the two is:
[2007.05.29 19:31:03] LeslieCP: open community vs. closed community
[2007.05.29 19:31:10] Gandalf_Parker: trhanks for that. I will need for it a semi-serious rescue coming up
[2007.05.29 19:31:16] Aaron: hipster, hearts and macho... how about a t-shirt with a pocket for us geeks who NEVER go anywhere without a pen?
[2007.05.29 19:31:17] LeslieCP: aaron, i feel your pain
[2007.05.29 19:31:28] LeslieCP: i could carry dog treats in it
[2007.05.29 19:31:39] Aaron: and for the "protest kit", if there was a feature to size all the identically-sized buttons and round magnets in one step instead of doing the solo item, then the 10's then the 100's.
[2007.05.29 19:31:39] LeslieCP: yes
[2007.05.29 19:31:43] Aaron: URL would go GREAT on a pocket.
[2007.05.29 19:31:52] SDDogRescue: great links, thankx!
[2007.05.29 19:31:56] LeslieCP: ok, so also remember to keep your shop fresh
[2007.05.29 19:32:04] LeslieCP: if you create a good retail experience
[2007.05.29 19:32:08] LeslieCP: your supporters will come back
[2007.05.29 19:32:19] LeslieCP: i know a crazy lady who loves us and she has more bad rap shirts than i do
[2007.05.29 19:32:21] LeslieCP: so does her dog
[2007.05.29 19:32:30] LeslieCP: she checks the shop every month to see what's new
[2007.05.29 19:32:33] LeslieCP: use your newsletter
[2007.05.29 19:32:34] SDDogRescue: feature it in your regular nonprofit newsletters!
[2007.05.29 19:32:36] LeslieCP: build a newsletter
[2007.05.29 19:32:37] LeslieCP: yes!
[2007.05.29 19:32:41] spiritstore: Thank you for the links! I'm also hoping for information about tax regulations on non-profits and online stores, any information there?
[2007.05.29 19:32:54] LeslieCP: spiritstore, that's up to your accountant
[2007.05.29 19:33:02] LeslieCP: i can't advise on how to report the earnings
[2007.05.29 19:33:13] LeslieCP: i'd talk to your accountant though.
[2007.05.29 19:33:22] Aaron: it'd be sweet if the buyer got a TAX ID of the non-profit for his tax statement
[2007.05.29 19:33:22] LeslieCP: you can put this in your product descriptions
[2007.05.29 19:33:25] SDDogRescue: hand it all over to your treasurer : )- that's what I do!
[2007.05.29 19:33:28] spiritstore: Thank you, I figured that was the route I needed to go next.
[2007.05.29 19:33:41] LeslieCP: the other thing you can do is just put it prominently on your shop
[2007.05.29 19:33:48] Gandalf_Parker: letting a page get "old" will lower your SEO ratings. updating descriptions, or having something like "our latest newsletter" on your site will give search engines new material and raise your ratings
[2007.05.29 19:33:48] LeslieCP: yes
[2007.05.29 19:33:52] Aaron: and a value of the item to be deducted
[2007.05.29 19:34:02] LeslieCP: back to newsletters
[2007.05.29 19:34:04] LeslieCP: if you don't have one
[2007.05.29 19:34:10] LeslieCP: you can utilize your shop newsletter
[2007.05.29 19:34:16] SDDogRescue: bring it on!
[2007.05.29 19:34:19] LeslieCP: if you do have one, be sure to feature new products
[2007.05.29 19:34:34] LeslieCP: i personally like to do product newsletters and mention a dog or 2
[2007.05.29 19:34:43] spiritstore: Great pointers so far and thank you for the links, unfortunately I'll have to get the rest from the transcript information.
[2007.05.29 19:34:43] LeslieCP: but that's becaues we had a product newsletter before a regular one
[2007.05.29 19:35:01] LeslieCP: and since all these people want to know about new products, well, i'm going to tell thm
[2007.05.29 19:35:08] SDDogRescue: we do the opposite - a rescue newsletter and feature a special item (and an affiliate item)
[2007.05.29 19:35:08] LeslieCP: in fact, i'll tell them once a month or so
[2007.05.29 19:35:21] LeslieCP: if you have trouble keeping your shop fresh, have a design contest
[2007.05.29 19:35:29] LeslieCP: right now i have a volunteer doing designs for me
[2007.05.29 19:35:39] LeslieCP: she feels very special and we're getting great designs
[2007.05.29 19:35:43] LeslieCP: bribe, beg, borrow
[2007.05.29 19:35:45] LeslieCP: LOL
[2007.05.29 19:35:48] spiritstore has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:35:50] LeslieCP: nonprofits have to be scrappy
[2007.05.29 19:36:09] LeslieCP: the other thing you can do is get creative with traditional fundraising
[2007.05.29 19:36:15] LeslieCP: i.e. why sell candy bars?
[2007.05.29 19:36:19] LeslieCP: you can sell cool mugs or something
[2007.05.29 19:36:27] LeslieCP: you can also do a cookbook
[2007.05.29 19:36:29] LeslieCP: or a calendar
[2007.05.29 19:36:38] LeslieCP: those are mainstays of grassroots fundraising
[2007.05.29 19:36:45] LeslieCP: people are used to it
[2007.05.29 19:36:47] LeslieCP: so do one!
[2007.05.29 19:36:58] LeslieCP: you can also do some sort of event
[2007.05.29 19:37:02] LeslieCP: like a concert or whatever
[2007.05.29 19:37:06] LeslieCP: and tie in merchandise with the event
[2007.05.29 19:37:18] LeslieCP: sell it, raffle it, whatever - people love free t-shirts
[2007.05.29 19:37:26] LeslieCP: i mean, seriously - people LOVE FREE T-SHIRTS
[2007.05.29 19:37:32] LeslieCP: you can buy the world with a free t-shirt
[2007.05.29 19:37:43] LeslieCP: mm k... any questions?
[2007.05.29 19:37:49] garyoa1 has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:37:53] SDDogRescue: we add CP merchanide to our silent auction table (featuring that year's special event artwork)
[2007.05.29 19:37:56] LeslieCP: i may have exhausted all my great ideas kind of early
[2007.05.29 19:37:59] LeslieCP: LOL
[2007.05.29 19:38:11] LeslieCP: oh, selling on eBay
[2007.05.29 19:38:17] LeslieCP: i'm going to experiment with that
[2007.05.29 19:38:32] LeslieCP: there's an onramp program to teach people how to sell better
[2007.05.29 19:38:44] LeslieCP: and there's an API that i'm hoping will make this fairly painless
[2007.05.29 19:38:46] LeslieCP: stay tuned...
[2007.05.29 19:39:05] Gandalf_Parker: If you want a batch of stickers, bumper stickers can be made into 100 little stickers to cut apart and use
[2007.05.29 19:39:05] LeslieCP: that's a good idea
[2007.05.29 19:39:12] LeslieCP: i dunno about 100
[2007.05.29 19:39:17] LeslieCP: you'd have to have bifocals to read it
[2007.05.29 19:39:28] LeslieCP: but certainly you can segment out a bumper sticker
[2007.05.29 19:39:35] LeslieCP: i like selling cheapies at events
[2007.05.29 19:39:40] LeslieCP: i.e. minibuttons for $1 and such
[2007.05.29 19:39:49] Aaron: Would love rolls of stickers.
[2007.05.29 19:39:49] LeslieCP: note to self: sticker rolls
[2007.05.29 19:39:51] karen has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:40:02] LeslieCP: you can also make posters to be segmented
[2007.05.29 19:40:07] LeslieCP: and cut into smaller signs or posters
[2007.05.29 19:40:09] garyoa1: I get 36 to a bumper sticker. I'd love to see perforated stickers
[2007.05.29 19:40:28] LeslieCP: garyoa, i'll pass that along
[2007.05.29 19:40:38] LeslieCP: is anyone here using their CP stuff as a fundraiser?
[2007.05.29 19:40:41] Mila has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:41:08] BrittaCP: anyone?
[2007.05.29 19:41:20] LeslieCP: ok... so i guess we'll end the chat, unless folks have questions for me
[2007.05.29 19:41:28] LeslieCP: (you can ask about anything CP related now)
[2007.05.29 19:41:36] Gandalf_Parker has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:41:38] Aaron: I'd like to do more
[2007.05.29 19:41:40] SDDogRescue: I run the Cocker store and the Springer store
[2007.05.29 19:41:40] SDDogRescue: both for fundraising
[2007.05.29 19:41:42] SDDogRescue: more effort into the Cocker store, tho
[2007.05.29 19:41:48] LeslieCP: SDDog, how is it working?
[2007.05.29 19:41:57] Gandalf_Parker: I have 2 non-profit shops
[2007.05.29 19:42:01] SDDogRescue: great for us!
[2007.05.29 19:42:06] LeslieCP: that's good
[2007.05.29 19:42:17] LeslieCP: if you read the cheat sheet you might get some ideas
[2007.05.29 19:42:23] garyoa1: I sell to groups for their fundraising.
[2007.05.29 19:42:25] LeslieCP: Cockers are pretty good business - take it over!
[2007.05.29 19:42:43] SDDogRescue: last year we used tshirts to help promote our big fundraiser dinner at adoption events - volunteers loved the special edition shirts
[2007.05.29 19:42:48] ppix1 has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:43:08] LeslieCP: yes, anything "special" or "limited edition" will make volunteers and donors happy
[2007.05.29 19:43:22] ppix1 has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.29 19:43:24] Aaron: I'd like a quick guide to CP/eBay optimizing w/o getting clobbered on shipping issues.
[2007.05.29 19:43:24] LeslieCP: yeah, me too. i'm about to start learning
[2007.05.29 19:43:46] LeslieCP: http://www.cafepressdn.com/
[2007.05.29 19:43:59] LeslieCP: the ebay API should be in here somewhere
[2007.05.29 19:44:34] LeslieCP: i don't see it
[2007.05.29 19:44:37] LeslieCP: *sigh*
[2007.05.29 19:44:47] SDDogRescue: I mark them up only $1.00 for volunteers
[2007.05.29 19:44:49] SFFriar: SD..Did you make any money doing it?
[2007.05.29 19:45:38] AngelaCP has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.29 19:46:22] Shannon (hazeleyes7): Evening Leslie!
[2007.05.29 19:46:23] Dooni Designs Goofkins: hi
[2007.05.29 19:46:34] RP2008: howdey
[2007.05.29 19:46:35] Aaron: speaking of tags, it'd be insanely great to be able to get a report that had thumbnails of all the images in my basket with their tags
[2007.05.29 19:46:40] garyoa1: Or square stickers since all the shirt designs will just pop on them
[2007.05.29 19:46:41] SDDogRescue: In the Springer Store we have two types of pricing - premium for non-URL items and high for the same with our URL "tastefully placed" on the back/shoulder area
[2007.05.29 19:46:42] SDDogRescue: I also have a special feature on the Cocker homepage, but that area is only accessible to newsletter subscribers
[2007.05.29 19:46:44] SDDogRescue: The special edition Ts were primarily to promote the event. The volunteers bought the $1.00 markup ts directly from CP, so no upfront money for us, so in that respect, yes it made money (a little, but a positive number)
[2007.05.29 19:46:46] Karma Nova: Leslie, would you recommend Clark's Success with CafePress?
[2007.05.29 19:47:07] LeslieCP: Hey Karma - I haven't read the book, but there's a picture of me in it!
[2007.05.29 19:47:17] LeslieCP: Other shopkeepers seem to find it helpful
[2007.05.29 19:47:35] Karma Nova: Score! I think I'll check it out
[2007.05.29 19:47:49] LeslieCP: Let me know what you think
[2007.05.29 19:48:03] BrittaCP: ok... gang.... seems there are no more questions coming in.... we're gonna wrap this ne up a few minutes early so we can catch our carpools
[2007.05.29 19:48:32] BrittaCP: Thanks everyone for joining... and thank you Leslie for sharing your wisdom

[2007.05.29 19:49:00] Aaron: Would it be possible to have non-profit orders aggregated into a single shipment to save on shipping. Let's say my org is in Los Angeles and I've got 100 separate orders, each with their own size and pre-paid. ADD TO BATCH SHIPMENT would be great
[2007.05.29 19:49:02] BrittaCP: The lobby is still open for anyone who would like to continue chatting
[2007.05.29 19:49:05] Shannon (hazeleyes7): Thank you Leslie!
[2007.05.29 19:49:09] LeslieCP: Sure
[2007.05.29 19:49:10] SDDogRescue: thanks!
[2007.05.29 19:49:13] LeslieCP: Aaron, that's a good idea
[2007.05.29 19:49:33] LeslieCP: I'd like to overall make the service more accessible to nonprofits
[2007.05.29 19:49:41] BrittaCP: Have a good evening!

[2007.05.23 18:09:54] ShelbyCP: We're going to get started. I have a few comments to make and then we'll open it up for Q&A in a few minutes...
[2007.05.23 18:10:02] ShelbyCP: Good afternoon everyone and thanks for taking the time to join us for today’s chat!!
[2007.05.23 18:10:15] ShelbyCP: On the CafePress side, we’ve got me (Shelby), Warren, Marty, Marc, Angela, Britta, and Sara. (Sara is the new Director of Acquisition and Retention Marketing at CafePress)
[2007.05.23 18:10:30] ShelbyCP: We’re in the final stages of our Affiliate Program migration to CJ and today we’d like to discuss the Affiliate Link Redirection feature.
[2007.05.23 18:10:39] ShelbyCP: If you are a current CafePress Affiliate (enrolled in the Program prior to April 2007) and wish to continue using your existing CafePress Affiliate links after May 31, we can redirect them to CJ for you.
[2007.05.23 18:10:50] ShelbyCP: All you need to do is provide us your CJ PID and we’ll handle the rest. CJ will handle tracking, reporting, and commission payments.
[2007.05.23 18:11:05] ShelbyCP: The Link Redirection feature provides a simple way to allow Shopkeepers to link to their own Shops on CafePress and earn affiliate commission on sales that occur after the visitor you referred leaves your Shop.
[2007.05.23 18:11:12] ShelbyCP: Since affiliate sales do not count towards your volume bonus, it is important to identify yourself as a Shopkeeper and set up your CJ links for redirection.
[2007.05.23 18:11:23] ShelbyCP: To be eligible for affiliate link redirection, you must have been enrolled in the CafePress Affiliate Program prior to April 2007 and also have a current CJ affiliate account
[2007.05.23 18:11:35] ShelbyCP: (for new affiliates, we'll discuss an alternative solution)
[2007.05.23 18:11:47] ShelbyCP: If you do not have a CJ account yet, get on it! You can click here to join:

[2007.05.23 18:11:56] ShelbyCP: Here’s what you’ll need to do to enable Link Redirection:
[2007.05.23 18:12:05] ShelbyCP: 1. Login to Your CafePress Account (Your Account page) https://www.cafepress.com/cp/members/index.aspx
2. Under the Affiliate Central area, click “Redirect My Current Links to CJ”
3. From this page, enter your CJ PID in the space provided and click Save. Please note this feature only supports one CJ PID per CafePress account. You’ll see a message on the page telling you Link Redirection is Enable
[2007.05.23 18:12:27] ShelbyCP: You can modify your PID on the CafePress account page anytime.

[2007.05.23 18:12:37] ShelbyCP: To obtain your CJ PID, login to your CJ account and click the Account tab >> Web Site Settings. Your PID number will display on this page and is also visible in HTML code you can retrieve from the “Get Links” tab.

[2007.05.23 18:12:50] ShelbyCP: If you plan to use CJ affiliate links to link to your own CafePress Shop, but weren’t an affiliate prior to April 2007, you’ll need to append your CJ tracking URLs to identify yourself as an affiliate. Or, if you want to use CJ Affiliate links rather than enabling the link Redirection feature, you should use the XID parameter in all of your CJ tracking URLs.

[2007.05.23 18:13:17] ShelbyCP: Here's how to format your link using the XID parameter: (identifies you as a Shopkeeper)
[2007.05.23 18:13:25] ShelbyCP: Basic CJ Link:
http://www.qksrv.net/click-PID-10463747
[2007.05.23 18:13:52] ShelbyCP: CJ Link with XID parameter:
http://www.qksrv.net/click-PID-10463747?xid=CPAccountID
[2007.05.23 18:14:11] ShelbyCP: Replace "PID" with your CJ PID and replace "CPAccountID" with your CafePress PID
[2007.05.23 18:14:29] ShelbyCP: Please note the CafePress PID will be referred to as your CafePRess Account ID going forward.

[2007.05.23 18:16:24] ShelbyCP: I'm not aware of CJ links not working on MySpace... but if that's the case, then yes this would be a solution around that...
[2007.05.23 18:16:55] shopaholicchick: thank you for doing the redirects - all we have to do is give you our CJ pid right??
[2007.05.23 18:16:55] WarrenCP: yes, there should be a link re-direction option available in the upper left hand corner of your account page when you first log into your account

[2007.05.23 18:16:59] foxvox: Will this redirection be a permanent feature? Or will it only be through the end of this year - soemthing that was mentioned a while ago (somewhere - LOL)
[2007.05.23 18:16:59] ShelbyCP: We plan to support the feature indefinitely...
[2007.05.23 18:17:29] Michigal: How long will Cafe Press continue with redirecting affiliate links?
[2007.05.23 18:17:29] ShelbyCP: The link redirection feature will be supported indefinitely.
[2007.05.23 18:17:38] camobaby: great i like that makes it easyer on us to have it indefinitely
[2007.05.23 18:18:08] Lekker Jen: I just want to say thanks for setting this up. I know it helps me out, and I only have a handful of links out there.
[2007.05.23 18:18:11] garyoa1: Is the PID case sensitive?
[2007.05.23 18:18:11] WarrenCP: PID's are numbers so there are no issues case sensitivity
[2007.05.23 18:18:21] MommiesTees.com: You mentioned in the forums about the redirection being able to track TIDs as well. (Well, that you are working on it)
[2007.05.23 18:18:26] Michigal: You say you plan to support the redirecting indefinitely. Would you still suggest that we start to change our links over to the CJ structure or is it safe to say the redirecting will be pretty secure?
[2007.05.23 18:18:38] Cyndi: Can we use a combination of link styles?
[2007.05.23 18:18:38] ShelbyCP: Yes, you can use the existing link structures -- you can link to Shops, search results, product pages etc. This will work for link redirection and with CJ links.
[2007.05.23 18:18:46] Carl (absolute cotton): I'd much rather link to my shops using the old method (for seo.) will the new redirection method affect our inbound link counts for the search engines?
[2007.05.23 18:18:49] Hazeleyes7 (Shannon): Found the redirect but the instructions say it is under the Affiliate Central area and mine is just under my account - many people are having problems finding it because they are looking in the wrong place.
[2007.05.23 18:19:01] garyoa1: No, I mean pid vs PID. The CP pid needed to be lower case.
[2007.05.23 18:19:11] Johnny Tee: Question re: linking to products. If I am using the CJ 'get links' option correctly and search on products, they seem to show only a small percentage of total products available. One search on CJ returned 680 products vs. 125,000 on CP. If we use the redirection, will all products be supported?
[2007.05.23 18:19:19] MommiesTees.com: Will the CJ links provide better reporting than the "legacy" links?
[2007.05.23 18:19:19] Cyndi: Move forward with new links, but not have to change all the old ones now?
[2007.05.23 18:19:19] WarrenCP: If you do not wish to change your old links, you can use the link re-direction feature that we just released
[2007.05.23 18:19:23] camobaby: what date has cafepress chose to lock are payments as far as cj so when ould we possably get paid or is there a number we can call at cj to as?
[2007.05.23 18:19:24] Johnny Tee: This seems much easier than the CJ link format, any adantage to changing?
[2007.05.23 18:19:24] ShelbyCP: I can't really think of an advantage to changing per say... the link redirection feature is designed to make it really easy for existing affiliates to continue earning the same revenue stream they were earning from the old program.

[2007.05.23 18:21:10] Hazeleyes7 (Shannon): Questions: 1) I dont have the link to Redirect My Current Links to CJ and 2) I have multiple CJ PID numbers so which one do I use?
[2007.05.23 18:21:10] ShelbyCP: 1. Go to "Your Account" Under the Affiliate Program area, click "Enable Link Redirection. Enter your CJ PID on this page and click Save. 2. At this time we are only supporting one CJ PID per CafePRess account.

[2007.05.23 18:22:05] jean/ rotemgear: what happens if an affiliate is using frames and shoppers cannot use the CP chopping cart?
[2007.05.23 18:22:05] ShelbyCP: I believe in this case the Affiliate is using what we call "Remote Add to Cart" This activity is supported via CJ links, and redirection of existing CP links.
[2007.05.23 18:22:34] Michigal: Shelby, just to let you know CJ reactivated my account after using the 1-800 number someone posted in the affiliate forum. They were courteous and helpful and did it right away with no problems.
[2007.05.23 18:22:38] BrittaCP: great!
[2007.05.23 18:22:49] Michigal: Have emails been sent to all affiliates to let them know about the redirect feature? I'd like to think that any sites that are affiliating our stuff continues to get their commission. Not everyone checks the CP board.
[2007.05.23 18:22:49] ShelbyCP: An email was delivered on Monday to all active affiliates. We defined active affiliates as anyone who earned a commission in the Affiliate program during the past 12 months. This went to a group of about 3,000 people.

[2007.05.23 18:23:48] Hazeleyes7 (Shannon): Which PID should we use if we have multiple CJ PID numbers? How will CP track them all if we are only allowed to put one CJ PID number in the redirect?
[2007.05.23 18:23:48] ShelbyCP: You should decide which CJ PID to use - its totally up to you... not sure if I fully answered your question...
[2007.05.23 18:23:56] Knedert: wow... 3,000 people
[2007.05.23 18:23:58] pilegirl: I wish I understood. I am embarassed. I tried to read up on what affiliates are in advance. Someone has a link on their website that sends them to my store and they get a cut of my profit if someone buys something?
[2007.05.23 18:23:59] WarrenCP: Thats part of it. An affiliate is someone that refers a customer to CafePress.com. If the referred customer makes a purchase, then that affiliate earns a commission for the referral. If the referred customer makes a purchase from a CafePress.com shop, then the shopkeeper pays the affiliate a portion of their mark-up for the referral (CP pays out part of the base price to the affiliate as well)
[2007.05.23 18:24:15] MommiesTees.com: One thing that the link redirection may help: I have Cafepress.com as a trusted site, so when I click one of my CJ links I get two different warnings as I go through their tracking urls. When I use a CP link, I get none or only the one. I think those "sxjrt.com"-like domains can be a little unsettling to some.
[2007.05.23 18:24:15] ShelbyCP: This warning you are seeing will be fixed in an upcoming code release....
[2007.05.23 18:24:24] Adam: does the link redirection prevent double dipping?
[2007.05.23 18:24:24] ShelbyCP: Yes it does.
[2007.05.23 18:25:17] Timewarp: what about TIDs on redirected links, can we see those somewhere?
[2007.05.23 18:25:17] WarrenCP: Unfortunately not. The link re-direct feature only redirects the PID information over to CJ. Supplemental tracking codes will not be recorded.
[2007.05.23 18:25:20] Hazeleyes7 (Shannon): IF CP is only able to support 1 CJ PID, then how will it track the other PIDs should they have more than 1 CJ PID?
[2007.05.23 18:25:20] ShelbyCP: Most Affiliates using the link redirection feature are Shopkeepers that are new to CJ and have only one PID. Its a limitation but I don't think its a showstopper for most Affiliates. Let me know if there are other concerns.
[2007.05.23 18:26:01] MommiesTees.com: Hazeleyes7 (Shannon), while they are only supporting one CJ PID, they will be tracking TIDs, so you could use that to help distinguish sites as you've probably been doing.
[2007.05.23 18:26:01] ShelbyCP: Tracking TIDs is not live yet but is coming in a future release. Please note the parameter you know as TIDs are called SIDs on Commission Junction.

[2007.05.23 18:26:27] ShelbyCP: Correct - use the XID parameter on those links.

[2007.05.23 18:27:42] valeriieee: I want to be sure I understand the re-direct... That means all my old affiliate links will now automatically "work as CJ links" and I don't have to change anything myself, correct?
[2007.05.23 18:27:42] WarrenCP: In short, yes. The re-direct feature will pass your old CafePress.com affiliate link through to CJ and then direct to the destination URL. That way, the original link does not have to be coded and CJ still receives the link information and any subsequent information.
[2007.05.23 18:27:59] MommiesTees.com: "The link re-direct feature only redirects the PID information over to CJ. Supplemental tracking codes will not be recorded." What? That's opposite of what I understood in the future.
[2007.05.23 18:27:59] ShelbyCP: What do you mean by supplemental tracking codes? (TIDs)?
[2007.05.23 18:28:16] MommiesTees.com: It might be helpful on the FAQs to have something for legacy affiliates that have things like "CP TID = CJ SID", etc.
[2007.05.23 18:28:16] ShelbyCP: Good suggestion - we are adding this to our Linking best practices page and FAQs

[2007.05.23 18:29:02] ShelbyCP: Correct - you should not need to make any changes to how you do business today. Please test your activities by setting up link redirection and making sure you see stats reporting in your CJ account.

Question re: linking to products. If I am using the CJ 'get links' option correctly and search on products, they seem to show only a small percentage of total products available. One search on CJ returned 680 products vs. 125,000 on CP. If we use the redirection, will all products be supported? And if so, is there a way to code CJ to accept other products?
[2007.05.23 18:30:42] ShelbyCP: The Product links you see on CJ are only a small snapshot of the entire CafePress Marketplace. We submit to CJ a Product Catalog of the top 600,000 products that have sold on CafePress. This is a separate concept altogether from Link redirection -- link redirection simply forwards your existing CafePress affiliate links so they continue to track and earn commission. If you have a product link
[2007.05.23 18:30:58] Hazeleyes7 (Shannon): Thank you for answering all of my questions! :)
[2007.05.23 18:31:07] ShelbyCP: If you have a product link that is on a product not contained in the CafePress Product Catalog available on CJ, it will still track and earn commission.... hope that explains
[2007.05.23 18:31:23] Michigal: What is double dipping?
[2007.05.23 18:31:23] WarrenCP: Double dipping is when a shopkeeper who is also an affiliate refers a sale to their own shop. By doing so, they are earning both the affiliate commission and the shopkeeper commission.
[2007.05.23 18:31:49] Johnny Tee: Yes, thanks. I think I will stay with the redirect for now.
[2007.05.23 18:31:50] kaosnorway: what if we got more than one CJ PID?
[2007.05.23 18:31:50] ShelbyCP: You can use the XID link parameter described above. Let me know if you want me to repeat it.
[2007.05.23 18:32:17] Tshirt d'Art: How often are the top 600k products updated on CJ? Is it weekly or monthly or ???
[2007.05.23 18:32:17] WarrenCP: Ad hoc at the moment

[2007.05.23 18:32:30] kippy: so we should only use one CJ pid for the cafepress redirects, right?
[2007.05.23 18:32:30] WarrenCP: Yep
[2007.05.23 18:32:54] kippy: gotcha, thanks
[2007.05.23 18:32:55] Adam: Has the new link redirection affected SIDs?
[2007.05.23 18:32:55] ShelbyCP: It shouldn't have but we'd be happy to troubleshoot this with you. IM me after the chat.
[2007.05.23 18:33:06] MommiesTees.com: Gosh, I think those are all of my questions! Thank you.

[2007.05.23 18:33:53] ShelbyCP: Here is an example of an Affiliate who uses Remote Add to Cart: http://onesiesandmore.com/
[2007.05.23 18:33:55] Knedert: Will the info that Shelby has shared be posted like other chats have? Since this is so confusing??

[2007.05.23 18:34:29] Carl (absolute cotton): thanks from my side, too - no further questions. Very simple and straight forward!

[2007.05.23 18:35:10] dooni designs: i have already made a few "CJ" sales.. How is the success of the new program looking?
[2007.05.23 18:35:10] ShelbyCP: Glad you asked! The program within one month has already attracted over 3,000 new affiliates to CafePress and over 80 are already earning commission. We've paid almost $10,000 in commissions in the first month of the program.

[2007.05.23 18:35:23] Cyndi: Since CP is sort of out of the affiliate biz now...will there ever be a chat for newer affiliates here to help with marketing and seo ideas, etc? Or is there anything on CJ for that? [I haven't really dipped my toe yet]
[2007.05.23 18:35:43] maryo: are you still going to have niche product feeds?
[2007.05.23 18:35:43] ShelbyCP: We'd love to -- but we need to evaluate this and build the business case for it.
[2007.05.23 18:35:53] ShelbyCP: If you have ideas for how this would benefit your business, let me know.
[2007.05.23 18:36:25] valeriieee: i have not yet actually moved my affiliate links offsite as of yet. (that's my plan for the weekend!) but i'm just curious...if i'm using the redirect feature, why wouldn't shop to shop linking still work?
[2007.05.23 18:36:25] WarrenCP: No, they wouldn't. Only clicks originating from external websites will be tracked. So a shop to shop link will not be tracked as the visitor is already on CafePress when clicking on the shop link.

[2007.05.23 18:36:58] jean/ rotemgear: Shelby what am I looking at there? I am not understanding what happens if an affiliate outside of CP is using frames
[2007.05.23 18:36:58] ShelbyCP: The affiliate in that example is hosting the product link and sending the transaction directly to CafePress's shopping cart and earning a commission. This may not have anything to do with iframes, but its a good example of how Add to Cart works.
[2007.05.23 18:37:04] valeriieee: Thanks :)
[2007.05.23 18:37:48] Adam: isn't it obvious how it would benefit us? we're all niche affiliates :P
[2007.05.23 18:37:48] ShelbyCP: No, it isn't obvious Adam, I would love to learn more about how it would benefit you so that I can quantify the economics and get executive approval to move ahead with this type of initiative.
[2007.05.23 18:37:56] kippy: After the 31st will all of our tracking show up on CJ rather than on CP then?
[2007.05.23 18:37:56] WarrenCP: Yes, for your CJ affiliate links, all tracking will be available on CJ.

[2007.05.23 18:38:26] ShelbyCP: We just need to build a business case for it... we'd be happy to talk with you directly and hear your ideas.
[2007.05.23 18:38:49] char: is the xml feed still going to be available for those of us that wish to create niche sites
[2007.05.23 18:38:49] WarrenCP: Yes, the internal XML feed will still be available through our developers network. For the CJ feed, you will need to contact CJ to have that option made available.
[2007.05.23 18:40:31] shopaholicchick: warren this means if we have a "my friends" page it will not be redirected to CJ?? or if we are using the CP searchbox that has out pid in it?? we will NOT get credit for those??
[2007.05.23 18:40:31] WarrenCP: If those links reside in your CafePress.com shop, then you will not be credited with affiliate sales. The links will still direct to the destination URL, but no affiliate credit will be given.
[2007.05.23 18:41:33] Amere Mortal: So if I send someone to my cafepress shop from my own domain website, and they go from there to another shop and buy something, I get a commission, right?

[I haven't really dipped my toe yet]
[2007.05.23 18:44:45] ShelbyCP: Cyndi -- thanks for your question. Its not that we're out of the Affiliate business, its just that we're changing the positioning of the program. We believe people new to the space of Affiliate marketing can make a lot more money engaging in the CafePress Shopkeeper side of things... so we aren't really planning any educational chats.
[2007.05.23 18:44:51] Adam: what's an Acquisition and Retention Marketing Director - sounds serious
[2007.05.23 18:44:51] SaraCP: Acquisition = bringing new buyers to Cafepress.com through search marketing, affiliates, other online marketing channels and Retention = getting them to come back and buy more (and often!)

[2007.05.23 18:46:21] maryo: Niche feeds on CJ would provide more exposure for the people who are not in the top 600,000. You have a huge product catalog - why not provide as much of it as possible.
[2007.05.23 18:46:21] ShelbyCP: Most Affiliates who are interested in huge data sets (e.g. over 55 million unique products!!) will work directly through the CafePress Developer's network to get the full feed. The 600k feed is just a starting point.
[2007.05.23 18:46:42] jembie has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.23 18:46:55] foxvox: So... it would 'behoove' use to use affiliate links when linking to our own shops still?
[2007.05.23 18:46:55] ShelbyCP: Yes - if you are linking from outside the CP domain, you should use your affiliate link so you can earn commission in cases where customers leave your Shop but buy from another Shop.
[2007.05.23 18:47:39] maryo: Part of affiliate marketing is creating niche sites that cater to a target audience. Traffic means nothing. Targeted traffic that converts to sales in an entirely different thing. One way to cater to that kind of traffic is to serve a certain niche.
[2007.05.23 18:47:39] ShelbyCP: Totally agree with you -- and many of you savvy affiliates out there will identify and catalog those niches using the CP Product Catalog available through the Developer's network.
[2007.05.23 18:47:47] foxvox: Thanks.
[2007.05.23 18:48:02] Carl (absolute cotton): Warren, is there any advantage to using the paid CJ feed versus the free xml feed from CP?
[2007.05.23 18:48:02] WarrenCP: One of the great things about the CJ feed is that the feed from CJ is not merchant specific. Meaning that you can get the data feed for any of the merchants on CJ. If you have a site that sells more than just CP products, then it allows you to mix in products from other merchants.
[2007.05.23 18:48:18] foxvox: Will there be new search boxes available for Cp through CJ? Last time there were only banners.
[2007.05.23 18:48:18] ShelbyCP: Yes, we will get some Search boxes live on CJ within the next couple of weeks. We've been very focused on getting through the migration, but search boxes are on the To-Do List.
[2007.05.23 18:48:21] WarrenCP: As for the CP feed, there isn't a limitation in terms of how many products you can pull, but I'm sure that if you did that, you would crash you computer.
[2007.05.23 18:49:17] Tshirt d'Art: So if I host my own domain (I do), and have my add to cart functionality send my customer directly to a cafepress shopping cart using cafescripts (or a similar program) where I add in my cafepress id (as has worked in the past), the redireciton feed will redirect? And ShelbyCP not from before was for a site that was cafepress to cafepress type add to cart?
[2007.05.23 18:49:17] ShelbyCP: Sorry you lost me at the last sentence... can you clarify?
[2007.05.23 18:49:46] maryo: Well except the API doesn't really work like it should.
[2007.05.23 18:49:46] ShelbyCP: True -- this is another area we need to work with our Affiliates this year to build the business case. I agree there is a big opportunity here.

[2007.05.23 18:50:32] WarrenCP: It's once you enable the link re-direction feature.
[2007.05.23 18:51:40] jean/ rotemgear: "many of you savvy affiliates out there will identify and catalog those niches using the CP Product Catalog available through the Developer's network." -- means we have to create the niche feeds ourselves?
[2007.05.23 18:51:40] ShelbyCP: It means ... CafePress opens up its API for you to peek in and use your savvy skills to manipulate the data in order to build sites / campaigns / keyword lists / etc as you see fit for your Affiliate business. We acknowledge there are some things we need to do to make the data more accessible / easy to manipulate. We'll be working on this
[2007.05.23 18:51:56] Timewarp: the CP feed chokes if trying get products from a store that is too big
[2007.05.23 18:51:56] ShelbyCP: Yep, we acknowledge there are issues we need to fix.
[2007.05.23 18:51:57] Cyndi: Has anything been discussed about CJ integrating a "TopicAd" type of link structure for us? I reaaaaallly miss topic ads...
[2007.05.23 18:51:57] WarrenCP: For now, we're no longer supporting TopicAds. We may take a look at adding a similar feature later on, but nothing is set in stone for that at this time.
[2007.05.23 18:52:10] Adam: Can you provide the 600K feed outside of CJ? many merchants do this too.. would ya?

[2007.05.23 18:52:51] ShelbyCP: I don't believe I said this wouldn't work. To my knowledge, Marty has coded the redirect so it works for iframes and Add to Cart....
[2007.05.23 18:53:06] dooni designs: i have 2 seperate CP accounts with different emails.. should i redirect with my CJ pid on both accounts?
[2007.05.23 18:53:06] WarrenCP: Yep, otherwise one of those accounts (im assuming they're both affiliate) will no longer be credited for affiliate sales
[2007.05.23 18:53:48] Adam: do those affiliates on CJ know about CafePressDN?
[2007.05.23 18:53:48] ShelbyCP: This is part of our marketing effort to them. We are a brand new program so many of them might not be aware of it. Over time, they will become aware.
[2007.05.23 18:53:54] Tshirt d'Art: Sorry, my mistake...thanks for the clarification Shelby.
[2007.05.23 18:53:56] Adam: Tracking updates at CJ on the hour, every hour. (usually - sometimes its 2) - CJ tracking is pretty good
[2007.05.23 18:53:56] ShelbyCP: cool
[2007.05.23 18:54:26] jean/ rotemgear: the issue is that frames interfere with the functionality of the CP shopping cart and affiliates may not know this.

[2007.05.23 18:09:49] AngelaCP: please hold off on posting... please! :D

[2007.05.23 18:12:28] graphroditee has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.23 18:12:37] ShelbyCP: To obtain your CJ PID, login to your CJ account and click the Account tab >> Web Site Settings.

[2007.05.23 18:12:53] Bob100 has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.23 18:14:41] ShelbyCP: pheeeeeeeeeeeew. That's about it.

[2007.05.23 18:16:24] camobaby: so if i understand it correctly this will alow us to use the old links that do work on sites like myspace where cjs links wont?
[2007.05.23 18:16:24] ShelbyCP: I'm not aware of CJ links not working on MySpace... but if that's the case, then yes this would be a solution around that...
[2007.05.23 18:16:55] shopaholicchick: thank you for doing the redirects - all we have to do is give you our CJ pid right??
[2007.05.23 18:16:55] WarrenCP: yes, there should be a link re-direction option available in the upper left hand corner of your account page when you first log into your account
[2007.05.23 18:16:59] Message sent to moderator(s)

[2007.05.23 18:19:48] Tshirt d'Art: Will 'add to cart' functionality continue to work as is or will we have to redirect our customers to cafepress product page using CJ links?
[2007.05.23 18:19:48] ShelbyCP: The Add to Cart functionality will continue to work with CJ link redirection...
[2007.05.23 18:20:05] eutstars has left the room (logged out)
[2007.05.23 18:20:44] AngelaCP: gary, there is no PID/pid in the URL string. Where the PID text is in the example URL, just put in your numerical pid.

[2007.05.23 18:30:42] Johnny Tee: Sorry if I missed your response to ->
Question re: linking to products.

[2007.05.23 18:36:25] WarrenCP: No, they wouldn't. Only clicks originating from external websites will be tracked. So a shop to shop link will not be tracked as the visitor is already on CafePress when clicking on the shop link.

[2007.05.23 18:44:45] ShelbyCP: Cyndi -- thanks for your question. Its not that we're out of the Affiliate business, its just that we're changing the positioning of the program.

[2007.05.23 18:52:10] Adam: Can you provide the 600K feed outside of CJ? many merchants do this too.. would ya?
[2007.05.23 18:52:10] ShelbyCP: What is the benefit?
[2007.05.23 18:52:35] NolanSoft.com has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.05.23 18:52:51] Tshirt d'Art: Sorry...not shoudl be note...you were talking about an example using frames that may not work and then mentioned that sending traffic directly to a cafepress cart may not work...
[2007.05.23 18:54:26] ShelbyCP: Ok, got it. Let me chat with Marty on this one and we'll ensure we fix the issue or communicate accordingly....
[2007.05.23 18:55:06] Tshirt d'Art: Shelby, sorry, I missed that...The cafescripts pgm sends traffic directly to cafepress's shopping cart...are you saying it doesn't work? or it does work and all is okay? :-c
[2007.05.23 18:55:06] ShelbyCP: Let me confirm with Marty ... you are using language I haven't seen before. Email me after... shelby@cafepress.com
[2007.05.23 18:55:15] Timewarp: Shelby, where should we send our ideas?
[2007.05.23 18:55:15] ShelbyCP: shelby@cafepress.com ... and also to Manisha.

[2007.05.23 18:56:38] jean/ rotemgear: So if the API doesnt work and we need to create out own niche feed using the CP Product Catalog available through the Developer's network, well, we can't actually, is this right? Since CP already has an CP with categories, why can;t they be used for niche feeds?
[2007.05.23 18:56:38] ShelbyCP: To be honest, this is an area we are still evaluating. Let's chat offline
[2007.05.23 18:56:45] Adam: Add to cart works - it works. End of :D
[2007.05.23 18:56:45] ShelbyCP: Cool - you would know :)

[2007.05.23 18:57:30] Nan: With so much information out there for switching to CJ (I have like 5 pages of stuff from diff places on CP) when can I expect it will be consolidated on one page for easy access?
[2007.05.23 18:57:30] ShelbyCP: I think the key pages are 1) the linking best practices page http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/affiliate/bestpractices and 2) the FAQ page: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/affiliate/cjfaqs#qs
[2007.05.23 18:57:51] ShelbyCP: Those two pages will tell you everything you need to know and if you still have questions - email me :)
[2007.05.23 18:58:18] BrittaCP: Ok... we have 3 minutes left... looks like we covered a lot
