[2007.08.29 01:07:50] AngelaCP: We want to cover some of the fundamentals of shop best practices. Although there are many things to think about, we’ll focus on three areas:
[2007.08.29 01:08:13] AngelaCP: SEO, Shop Navigation, Conversion

[2007.08.29 01:09:25] AngelaCP: We’ve covered this topic many times in workshops, tutorials, newsletters, etc… it’s a big factor in helping drive traffic to your shop.

[2007.08.29 01:10:25] AngelaCP: We know some Shopkeepers have difficulty knowing what they need to do for optimizing their shop for search engines… so we plan on putting together a visual tutorial to point out a few areas you should focus on.

[2007.08.29 01:10:50] Graphro-Di-Tee: That will be great!
[2007.08.29 01:10:52] AngelaCP: As part of overhauling your shop, please be sure to implement good SEO practices on your shop. One of the top things you can do for SEO is using descriptive sentences/phrases in your shop pages with the keywords your customers will be using to find your shop.
[2007.08.29 01:11:04] jgoode has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.08.29 01:11:13] AngelaCP: Here’s an example that I quickly made up…
[2007.08.29 01:11:25] AngelaCP: let me stress...quickly made up :D
[2007.08.29 01:11:35] AngelaCP: Welcome to the Shih Tzu Pet Shop! Collections of art and photographs of the lovable, adorable small toy dog breed can be found on gifts such as apparel, t-shirts, mugs, poster prints, stickers, cards, and other great products. It’s a perfect gift for dog lovers, friends, and family.

[2007.08.29 01:12:15] AngelaCP: I inserted some of the top keywords such as the word: Shih Tzu, pet, dog breed, art, photographs, and a list of popular products.
[2007.08.29 01:12:19] Towal: for those that don't know, you should put them in a sentence in descriptions (IMO at least) rather than just putting a bunch of random keywords (like tags) in your description.
[2007.08.29 01:12:36] BrittaCP: thanks for the tip
[2007.08.29 01:12:39] Graphro-Di-Tee: I agree Towal

[2007.08.29 01:13:41] shopa needs sleep: i agree tow - it looks much better for customers - and remember that search engines cannot see the picture - so type out what the saying is on your design
[2007.08.29 01:13:43] tyr has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"

[2007.08.29 01:14:56] NiftyGaloot: I see you also have 'gift' and who they are for, 'friends, family' etc. That's good SEO too! :)
[2007.08.29 01:15:02] Towal: right..that is what I meant. I have just seen people put in descriptions like tags and I don't think that is good for several reasons. I know that I personally will not affiliate a design that has a "tag like" description because it looks awful on my page. I have to pass up great designs because of no or tag like descriptions :(
[2007.08.29 01:15:09] Graphro-Di-Tee: I like to do section & product descriptions in Word. I get them the way I want them, then cut & paste into the fields when I'm creating new stuff.

[2007.08.29 01:15:46] slamdunk: is it helpful to put alt tags on images? do search engines see them?
[2007.08.29 01:15:53] tanith: be carfeful of Word - it throws in characters that are not compatible with HTML and databases
[2007.08.29 01:15:53] AngelaCP: definitely!

[2007.08.29 01:16:35] Graphro-Di-Tee: I don't use quotes, parentheses, etc.
[2007.08.29 01:16:45] AngelaCP: I have seen many shops that take advantage of SEO on their shop by putting in blocks of sentences in their shop intro. This may be good for search engines, but it’s not a good user experience for customers. The first thing they see is text, and it is unlikely customers will be reading all the text.
[2007.08.29 01:17:08] kiwi has left the room (logged out)
[2007.08.29 01:17:11] AngelaCP: Does anyone do this today or have seen someone else that has?

[2007.08.29 01:17:44] shopa needs sleep: ang i agree i took a lot of the text from my header and moved it to the footer, things like customization and so forth need to be on the page but not at the top of the page
[2007.08.29 01:18:00] goatlady: and yes I think I do that angela
[2007.08.29 01:18:08] BabyDave: I saw a shp today that looked like it had been designed by Dr. Bronner -- paragraphafter paragraph
[2007.08.29 01:18:12] kiwi_too: I've seen long intros - several paragraphs.
[2007.08.29 01:18:14] slamdunk: I add footer text that gives a review my different sections
[2007.08.29 01:18:21] AngelaCP: correct, and beware of cloaking
[2007.08.29 01:18:32] Mx-MoM has left the room (logged out)
[2007.08.29 01:18:34] AngelaCP: that means you enter a lot of "keywords" in white text and it's hidden
[2007.08.29 01:18:46] AngelaCP: i believe Google and other search engines can punish you for that
[2007.08.29 01:18:54] graphicdeeziner has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.08.29 01:19:13] goatlady: I find it easier to write the descriptions and then take the key words from that instead of trying to use all keywords in the descrition- then if there are any left over that I think are important use them in the title etc..
[2007.08.29 01:19:19] Mx-MoM has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"

[2007.08.29 01:19:45] Towal: I use a small block (paragraph) of text on my main page, but you can also see 2 sections above the fold. www.cafepress.com/tjcreations I don't think that is off putting, but perhaps I'm wrong?
[2007.08.29 01:19:55] BabyDave: Folks might want to note that bad SEO in one shop has a negtive impact on ALL shops -- we are all wihtin Caferpess.com
[2007.08.29 01:19:59] AngelaCP: thanks for sharing towal... does anyone want to comment?
[2007.08.29 01:20:37] AngelaCP: I know some Shopkeepers are uneasy about sharing their shops, so I didn't want to show examples during today's workshop unless you guys are comfortable sharing yours. So thanks towal!

[2007.08.29 01:20:49] Graphro-Di-Tee: Does Google see the keywords or just the CP Marketplace?
[2007.08.29 01:21:15] BrittaCP: All the CP Marketplace sees is your image tags. Google, will not see your image tags, but will see the keywords that you use within the content of your shop
[2007.08.29 01:21:18] Mr. Spaceman: So what your saying is that if you have an introductory paragraph it needs to be moved to the bottom of the page, correct? How is that done? :-c
[2007.08.29 01:22:05] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.08.29 01:22:14] AngelaCP: What I'm really saying if you have a LONG intro, long enough to push all your products below the fold, to keep it short, and put some of the text on the footer, in the grabber, between sections, etc. It's hard to say without an example.
[2007.08.29 01:22:20] Butterfly has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.08.29 01:22:30] BabyDave: Google sees TEXT -- just remember that much.
[2007.08.29 01:22:30] BrittaCP: well put
[2007.08.29 01:22:45] Ne' at 1512blvd: Put it in the footer box
[2007.08.29 01:22:45] foxvox: I have a randomized product feature at the top of my shop so there's at least one product image first, then a few paragraphs of text, and then many more images.
[2007.08.29 01:22:48] Kippy has left the room (logged out)
[2007.08.29 01:22:49] LoudMonkeys: If you're comfortable with HTML, then put it in the footer section of your custom HTML

[2007.08.29 01:22:57] Kippy has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.08.29 01:23:24] AngelaCP: What I meant was between the sections in your storefront. If you have a big feature, then stick text under that section, etc
[2007.08.29 01:23:45] Lekker Jen: You can use mine for examples if you want.
[2007.08.29 01:23:50] AngelaCP: sure thing!

[2007.08.29 01:24:14] BrittaCP: yes, as BabyDave pointed out, Google sees Text
[2007.08.29 01:24:20] Towal: Titles are also important for SEO...as well as descriptions. You can get a lot of good keywords in a title

[2007.08.29 01:24:31] Spice: I try to describe each item as if to someone blind (was suggested to me a while back). But wondering how important to state that item is also available on other products. I do that a lot and wonder if it is redundant

[2007.08.29 01:27:06] AngelaCP: It's not redundant. Use them in your intro. No need to list every product. Try for the ones that are your best sellers or what YOUR target customer is likely to search for
[2007.08.29 01:27:44] Sag: It's great Jen. Really looks well built and attractive.
[2007.08.29 01:28:13] Lekker Jen: Thanks. Lekker Bride is what they will all look like soon
[2007.08.29 01:28:29] AngelaCP: so, if you have a long intro, try to shorten it or break it up

[2007.08.29 01:28:34] AngelaCP: Having so much text in the intro can push the rest of your page down. What you want customers/visitors to see isn’t intro text, but products.
[2007.08.29 01:28:46] AngelaCP: we all know in the end that's what people are looking for...products!
[2007.08.29 01:28:56] AngelaCP: Whatever you do, be sure to show what you want your customers to see above the fold of the page. This takes us to Shop Navigation.

[2007.08.29 01:29:26] AngelaCP: Shop Navigation – this helps your customers easily find what they are looking for in your shop.
[2007.08.29 01:29:27] Sag: Yep, if you want to get windy ... stick it in an About Us section.
[2007.08.29 01:29:39] AngelaCP: great suggestion sag!
[2007.08.29 01:29:56] AngelaCP: create content pages so your customers can learn more about you while feeding search engines
[2007.08.29 01:30:00] BrittaCP: You can even create a section and use that as an about us area
[2007.08.29 01:30:20] AngelaCP: If your shop is laid out in a way that’s easy for your customers to find things, this helps improve the customer experience and can help keep someone in your shop longer. The longer they are in your shop, the more likely they are to buy.
[2007.08.29 01:30:52] Ne' at 1512blvd: I am in the process of cross linking alot of my stuff so that each product can be found many ways, but without it looking wierd!

[2007.08.29 01:31:34] AngelaCP: Sounds complex? Not really. Think about going to a well organized offline shop. You find what you need easily… things are in the expected aisles, the sizes are in the right places, etc.
[2007.08.29 01:31:47] shopa needs sleep: ang i agree totally after i recatagorized this and oragnized it isaw a surge in sales - also rememebr the 3 click rule and do not put too many subsections - if people go 3 clicks without product they are likley to leave

[2007.08.29 01:32:13] AngelaCP: Now, think about an offline shop where things are unorganized. You’re not sure where to go because things are not in the right places or where you think makes sense. You spend a lot of time searching…
[2007.08.29 01:32:41] AngelaCP: Think of your online shop the same way.
[2007.08.29 01:32:45] Message sent to moderator(s)
[2007.08.29 01:32:51] tanith: Thing about the 3 clicks rule is that if you do a good job of SEO on the sub-sections they will never land on the home page, they will land directly in the section
[2007.08.29 01:32:59] Sag: You can also set up a sub-section in a section for suggestive selling to promote multiple sales. I am working on that now.
[2007.08.29 01:33:10] iLostmyThumbs: I meant "aren't" ... shopa said it best anyways.
[2007.08.29 01:33:20] AngelaCP: I have seen great success with shops that organize their shop for different kinds of customers. Here are the 3 main “type” of customers to organize your shop for:
[2007.08.29 01:33:54] Bridey: some of my sections are split by type of product, winding up with 6 subsections, don't know if that is working as well as the sections I have all products on the page when you click off main page

[2007.08.29 01:34:48] BrittaCP: We've always said design... but if your designs are growing at an insane pace, then you may need to look at another option
[2007.08.29 01:34:48] AngelaCP: 1. Customers shopping by product type: Use the product pull down feature. It’s easy. All you need to do is insert a piece of code. Most Premium Shop templates have this piece of code. If you don’t have it, you can grab it here: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/help/help_pulldown.aspx
[2007.08.29 01:34:51] slamdunk: I like it by designs
[2007.08.29 01:35:02] AngelaCP: 2. Customers shopping by design: For this customer, they are more visual. They want to see your art. Organize your shop by designs. Show your actual designs instead of designs on product thumbnails.
[2007.08.29 01:35:14] Sag: I'll PM you my research on it goatlady. cool!
[2007.08.29 01:35:18] AngelaCP: With this type of customer, you can probably get them to buy more if you show them great stuff so play up your designs!
[2007.08.29 01:35:21] Romy: What is the optimal number of items to have in a section, say, for a visitor who is on dialup? I find it very time consuming (impossible) to create several sections for any one design, so without automatic pagination and with more products being added, it's not humanly possible to create a good shopping experience for all visitors. Any suggestions? Thanks!
[2007.08.29 01:35:33] Wontar: The dropdown code is still bugged, though.
[2007.08.29 01:35:34] BrittaCP: the thing with org. by design, is that you can always put a product drop down menu in your shop, whihc will give your customers the option of browsing by product as well

[2007.08.29 01:36:28] shopa needs sleep: romy i worried about that for a while but then i realized that these days about 75% of people have high speed in some form, and those who don't are used to waiting...just my opinion
[2007.08.29 01:36:54] slamdunk: when people separate by women's apparel, men's apparel, kids, etc... it's too hard to find the other styles that the design is available on
[2007.08.29 01:36:59] AngelaCP: 3. Customers shopping by recipient: Creating sections for him, her, kids, pets is ideal for this customer. Usually a gift customer, they go shopping for a person in mind. By creating sections, you help them make decisions for gift buying
[2007.08.29 01:37:16] AngelaCP: Another customer to consider is the budget conscious. Although you may not always cater to this customer, you can create an under $10 section and also appeal to cross selling.

[2007.08.29 01:39:09] Lekker Jen: Re: #3... Would you do that by category or design?
[2007.08.29 01:39:20] AngelaCP: Depends on the amount of designs you have

[2007.08.29 01:39:44] AngelaCP: So it's still a click away
[2007.08.29 01:39:57] AngelaCP: but you're giving your customers a way to process which direction they want to go

[2007.08.29 01:44:02] AngelaCP: The purpose of this workshop is to share best practices and how you can clean your shop. Hopefully you're doing light clean up in your shop and not a massive redesign.
[2007.08.29 01:44:33] AngelaCP: In that case, it may be difficult to not affect affiliates.
[2007.08.29 01:44:34] Romy: Thanks Angela, I didn't realise that moving was ok!
[2007.08.29 01:44:43] jgoode: cowpie it depends on how your shop is organized, but the best idea is to not eliminate your current section organiztion and if ou are doing a complete reorganize.. hide the old section for the new and your old links will still work
[2007.08.29 01:45:10] AngelaCP: you can test one. The Product URL should be the same. Product URLs are cafepress.com/shopid.product#

[2007.08.29 01:51:29] AngelaCP: On CafePress’s end, we’re always finding ways to help increase conversion in the shopping cart. The shopping cart is an area that Shopkeepers are unable to control.
[2007.08.29 01:51:40] AngelaCP: Other things to think about that Shopkeepers can control is: product descriptions, using good photography or photos in action in your shop, the art of story telling (about your shop and designs)
[2007.08.29 01:52:06] AngelaCP: so conversion is all about the entire package

[2007.08.29 01:58:18] BrittaCP: There’s big importance in updating your storefront frequently. By changing things up, your new customers will know what’s hot and current in your shop, and your returning customers won’t be revisiting a stale page.
[2007.08.29 01:58:36] BrittaCP: This is not to say that you have to do a major re-working of your layout every holiday or season, you want your returning customers to recognize your shop the next time they visit. Updates can be made on a small scale, which will still make your shop fun and fresh to visit. Here are some of the easiest.
[2007.08.29 01:58:54] BrittaCP: o Feature designs
[2007.08.29 01:59:04] BrittaCP: Create a section at the top of your shop where you feature a selected number of designs. The ones that you feature can be based on different factors.
[2007.08.29 01:59:37] BrittaCP:  New Designs: I think this one works well if you have a lot images in your shop. It puts your newest work upfront, so it’s easy to find.
[2007.08.29 01:59:53] BrittaCP:  Popular Designs: Study your sales reports. If you see a spike in sales on a particular design or two, gather them into a section.
[2007.08.29 02:00:03] BrittaCP:  Hot Designs: If there’s something in the happening in the media and you have a design to go along with it, feature it. People will instantly see it and relate.
[2007.08.29 02:00:13] BrittaCP: It doesn’t necessarily have to be politics either. It could be celebrity gossip (there is ALWAYS plenty of that – like Nicole and her 82 minutes in jail), sports, technology, awareness, and of course holidays.

[2007.08.29 02:01:55] AngelaCP: featuring makes a big difference in how your shop looks...imho :)
[2007.08.29 02:01:58] BrittaCP: This is a practice that I think all shopkeepers need to do from time to time.
[2007.08.29 02:02:03] chm: Yes, please, another chat, more about shop organization.
[2007.08.29 02:02:06] AngelaCP: definitely

[2007.08.29 02:02:13] BrittaCP: By keeping your shop selection at a manageable amount, you make it easier to navigate through your shop, and customers aren’t going to feel overwhelmed by options.
[2007.08.29 02:02:27] BrittaCP: . I know there are some online shops and even regular retail shops that have so much stuff in them that I forget everything that I looked at, and end up leaving because I cant make up my mind.
[2007.08.29 02:02:28] gabrielangel: this is what I did: www.gabrielangeldesign.com

[2007.08.29 02:02:49] BrittaCP: So how do you decide what to get rid of?
[2007.08.29 02:02:50] BrittaCP:  Items that aren’t selling
[2007.08.29 02:02:50] sag: repeat after me: keepsake box^.^
[2007.08.29 02:02:59] BrittaCP: study your sales reports
[2007.08.29 02:03:00] Towal: unfortunately the new tilebox looks like a framed tile in the thumbnail though :(

[2007.08.29 02:04:21] BrittaCP: infants don't need to rock out with thier ---- fill in the blank
[2007.08.29 02:04:24] gabrielangel: Another big note is to rearrange your products to the top left hand corner of the page. I sell a lot of dark tees so I rearrange them to the top.
[2007.08.29 02:04:36] Spice: Could we get a few new subjects to file our new cards under...eg...Get well section...Under Sentiments
[2007.08.29 02:04:53] BrittaCP: all in all it’s usually worth taking a moment to remove or fix up a product that the image doesn’t fit on.
[2007.08.29 02:04:54] AngelaCP: you mean for the marketplace?
[2007.08.29 02:04:59] Towal: tag appropriately too

[2007.08.29 02:05:42] BrittaCP: and if it's in a subsection, make sure to hide that as well

[2007.08.29 02:08:26] iLostmyThumbs: use the newest firefox with live spell checking ... it will underline misspelled words with red.
[2007.08.29 02:08:26] iLostmyThumbs: You want relavent content on your page, but don't write too much, or you can risk duplicate content problems.
[2007.08.29 02:08:26] BabyDave: I don't htink there was anyting wrong with the text at the top ot Towals page
[2007.08.29 02:08:26] slamdunk: mine is layed out in sections like Towal's... but my text is in alt tags for the sections graphics, instead of the visible paragraphs. Does that still work?
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] castahex: I think Towal's content is fine - doesn't look to top heavy to me. Is there any significance to where on a page key words appear, does Google etc look at the first 'x' words or anything like that?
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] goatlady: how to do this? between sections?
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] Towal: above the fold means without having to scroll in case anyone hasn't heard that before. it's the screen you see looking at your page without moving the mouse down at all
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] BabyDave: People should be very careful giving guidance in a chat about changing html
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] Ne' at 1512blvd: I have mine in the store dexcription box, but it is below the fold because i have custom html above it.
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] Ne' at 1512blvd: By the way, Lekker Jen, I love your stores =)
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] shopa needs sleep: LMAO spice - thats what i tell people!!!
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] goatlady: angela-using the sections descriptions this is not possible without actuall stripping the setions showing and doingyor front page in all html or am i missing something
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] BabyDave: Towal is correct the TITLE -- not the shop name -- the TITLE is your single most impmortant SEO contributor
[2007.08.29 02:08:27] kiwi_too: Is the text at the top of the page more important to Google than the text at the bottom?
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] Ne' at 1512blvd: What is the importance of bolding and linking and how do you knwo what to bold and link
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] graphicdeeziner: I'm new to learning this, how would I create content pages that customers can learn about me while feeding search engines?
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] cowpie: Okay, I need to re-organize my shops. How do I do that when the affiliates scream when you move things around?
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] Ne' at 1512blvd: http://www.cafepress.com/1512blvdbaby/3355712 is an example
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] Mr. Spaceman: I've noticed that many shops create a section with EVERY new design. When you click on the design it show all the product options for that particular design. Is this good shop set-up?
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] Spice: Any suggestions on how to offer the new cards. I have some in their own subsections for ones with lots of designs like Christmas, but what about others like Get Well Cards, ect. I'm concerned about ending up with little card sections all over the place. Maybe I should make one Card area for each of my stores instead.

You are welcome to use my Holidays store if you'd like. Christmas has it's own
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] shopa needs sleep: the other thing to consider is on porducts - like tshirts i hink it is ok to offer the logo full sized & pockets sized - but do not also offer it in 9 inches and 8 inches on every design - i have seen some shops where on cable it took me 20 minutes to load a section because they ahd the design on the same shurt 5 different way - and 4 of them looked the same to me
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] iLostmyThumbs: It's definitely more organized that way Karen, but my sales actually went down after organizing into men's, women's, kid's, etc.. It also makes it harder for SEO.
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] Amere: I have a problem with the product dropdown in that it picks up the number of thumbnails across from the front page. I have my front page set up to a single column, which makes searching by product a royal pain in my store. Can anything be done to change this?
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] SeaSquirrel: in my shop I have a what's hot and a what's new sections
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] goatlady: again on the drop down for products- why do they show the old designs and any way to make them show the new ones?
[2007.08.29 02:08:28] BabyDave: Section names become page TITLES for that section's main page, so they must be written carefully for best SEO value.
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] Karen: Is there a way to narrow down the pulldown menu so that someone looking for cat images on white tees doesn't have to look at the dogs and spiders etc?
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] shopa needs sleep: cowpie moving is ok it does not change the section #
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] shopa needs sleep: do not delete and create a new section for each move
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] Bridey: you just confused me Ang, but I stay that way
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] shopa needs sleep: cowpie if you are just using the move feature it does not cause an issue because the link does not change - the problem is when people delete and create new or import into a new section and delete teh old
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] cowpie: How do you do that?
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] Lorilei: One problem is when you split up one premium into smaller shops
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] NiftyGaloot: I affiliate sections, so it doesn't matter when you move them. Just don't delete them or add unrelated stuff into them.
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] RainbowPugs: Sorry I'm late! My shop is starting to get out of control! My designs go WAY below the navbar, and I've condensed things quite a bit semi recently!
[2007.08.29 02:08:29] cowpie: Sorry, kids, I still don't understand how to do that.
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] Romy: I was thinking of moving to a new section.
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] shopa needs sleep: bird i think that depends how many designs are on the page
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] goatlady: I use composites bird
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] Lekker Jen: tutortanith has it
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] goatlady: OK what about the sidebar? list all products or just sections?
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] Sag: yep
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] kiwi_too: I think Tanith has a tutorial on it.
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] tanith: I have it on my tutortanith site
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] Bridey: I put the http redirect code into the box on the right side of the section part (gad did that make sense?)
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] tanith: Here you go - all kinds of redirects
[2007.08.29 02:08:30] Sag: Tanith's tutorials are great. She saves my hide all the time with them!
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] shopa needs sleep: seasquirrel email me your link designs@shopaholic-chick.com and i will take a look at it tommorrow when i wake up and give you feedback if you like (it is 2am here)
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] Lekker Jen: I'll always take another check!
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] sag: yeah britta, send me another check!
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] BabyDave: yeah, I can always use another check
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] Ne' at 1512blvd: yeah, me too....
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] bird: I thought celebrities were off limits.
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] Ne' at 1512blvd: Should you archive so that the affilate links stay in place>
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] shopa needs sleep: you dont want to delete because you never know when someone will stumble on it - i am still selling things from the season of american idol 2 years ago!!!
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] Lekker Jen: I'm slowly culling my sections of externeous non-sellers - better navigation & Google loves updates
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] Towal: the problem with items that aren't selling though is that you never know what will sell. I was going to take off "pocket" designs to thin my products out and the day I was going to do it suddenly 3 or 4 sold
[2007.08.29 02:08:31] sag: or spin them off into new premium shop.
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] Amere: I have a design that sold for the first time after being up for nearly 2 yrs.
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] Amere: Oh, and a Mutts section in the dog breeds
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] Towal: it's annoying for customers and others storekeepers alike to look for I love my mommy and find "this is my f***ing halloween costume" on the first page of the search
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] Spice: Yes, the marketplace
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] shopa needs sleep: yes please do not tag-spam "don't hassle the hoff" should not be the 1st design i see under "usa" or "america" or "american pride"
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] shopa needs sleep: kiwi put it on everything it fits
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] Lekker Jen: Put them on everything that makes sense or fits.
[2007.08.29 02:08:32] shopa needs sleep: bye britta
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] Amere: rework the design so it does look good on a round product
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] sag: thanks britta!
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] slamdunk: you never know what they'll buy... but I don't want something coming out of my shop that doesn't look good
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] Amere: Bye Britta, thanks
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] shopa needs sleep: ang i have sold designs over a year after putting them u with no prior sales
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] strat: will part one be available for late commers
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] gabrielangel: Yeah I have to laugh when I see clocks with no numbers.
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] shopa needs sleep: can we have a tagging police to punish the tag-spammer:-)
[2007.08.29 02:08:33] slamdunk: definitely angela :)
[2007.08.29 02:08:34] LoudMonkeys: its okay to have your products on most of the CP products, just keep the better selling products near the top of the section and leave the less popular products at the bottom
[2007.08.29 02:08:34] kiwi_too: How about a Tagging Inquisition?
[2007.08.29 02:08:34] Towal: for that to work there needs to be consequences for inapproprate tagging though and there is none
[2007.08.29 02:08:34] Lekker Jen: Do we have a tagging best practices page? If not, It would be a good thing to create....
[2007.08.29 02:08:34] Romy: Recently, a design I'd had for 3 or 4 years that had never sold, sold! And . . . once it had, it became a good seller. Sometimes good designs just get buried in the marketplace and it just takes one sale to make them visible.

[2007.08.15 19:13:10] MarcCP: and the idea behind it is to help you with publicity, and recognize your acheivements when you succeed
[2007.08.15 19:13:30] MarcCP: it includes some cool stuff
[2007.08.15 19:13:46] MarcCP: 1. - we post press release written by SK's (selectively of course)

[2007.08.15 19:15:12] MarcCP: basically, the idea is that if you have some sort of announcement about what you're doing with your shop, and you write a press release we'll help you get the word out there with a press release posting
[2007.08.15 19:15:29] MarcCP: it's pretty cool, isn't it britta?
[2007.08.15 19:15:36] BrittaCP: it's awesome

[2007.08.15 19:16:31] BrittaCP: have any of you written press releases for your shops or products?

[2007.08.15 19:28:58] Bigmoust: who actually sees your press releases?
[2007.08.15 19:28:58] MarcCP: ONe of the first things a reporter does when researching a company is visit the "about us" page - having your recent news and announcement posted in the press center - within the about us page - is a good place to be
[2007.08.15 19:29:57] dem: i notice only 2 SK releases have been posted in 2007 on that page; is that from a lack of well-written releases?
[2007.08.15 19:29:57] SaraCP: hi

[2007.08.15 19:30:53] SaraCP: part of the reason was that we were not actively promoting the program
[2007.08.15 19:31:02] Photo Girl: What are the events that justify a release of news?
[2007.08.15 19:31:02] MarcCP: well, there are quite a few ideas I can give you, new products, new shop, somethign newsworthy - actually, I wrote about that here - have a look
[2007.08.15 19:31:04] BrittaCP: and here's a link: http://www.cafepress.com/cp/learn/pr_newsworthiness
[2007.08.15 19:32:25] SaraCP: but part of the problem was that not many people were submitting press releases

[2007.08.15 19:32:44] Bigmoust: How exactly does the media and TV see the press releases?
[2007.08.15 19:32:44] MarcCP: good question - posting on our site is only part of it. it gets exposure when reporters are researching CP. The other part is getting the word out to the rest of the world

[2007.08.15 19:33:50] MarcCP: it could potentially be posted in the SK's in the news section

[2007.08.15 19:34:39] MarcCP: I recomend PR WEB - there's a free service there
[2007.08.15 19:34:45] MarcCP: and there are TONS more
[2007.08.15 19:34:45] SaraCP: if it was last month, then yes please send it to us
[2007.08.15 19:34:57] little milky shop: will this be chargable?
[2007.08.15 19:34:58] BrittaCP: it is free, although marc will accept donations :)
[2007.08.15 19:35:03] Bigmoust has entered the room "CafePress Chat Room"
[2007.08.15 19:35:54] maryo: I don't think PR web is free anymore - though you can get good distribution for around $30 or $40 - it's worth it to pay a little to get wider distribution and better stats
[2007.08.15 19:35:54] MarcCP: hmm - I dont like the sound of not free, but $30 is pretty good
[2007.08.15 19:36:00] Misfit Designs: I will be the featured artist for September in an online magazine (Equestrian Network Magazine), I will be happy to send the link.
[2007.08.15 19:36:00] SaraCP: well done Misfit on getting featured in the magazine :) good for you. Please send us the link when it is published
[2007.08.15 19:36:18] Misfit Designs: Hey moderators - I have to leave (horses need feeding) but I'll be sure to research and participate in the PR program, I hadn't heard of it before. I've got lots of stuff happening that's worth reporting. Thanks for the tips, catch you next time. Jody Lynne
[2007.08.15 19:36:19] BrittaCP: see you next time!
[2007.08.15 19:36:31] SaraCP: hi andrei

[2007.08.15 19:37:39] SaraCP: please go to www.prweb.com to find out more information
[2007.08.15 19:38:01] MarcCP: I use PR Newswire and Business Wire mostly, but the cost difference is significant
[2007.08.15 19:38:06] jean / rotem gear: besides releases, are articles or features posted on a more regular basis now?
[2007.08.15 19:38:06] SaraCP: hi jean

[2007.08.15 19:39:41] MarcCP: I think maybe we should schedule a chat about releases and distribution
[2007.08.15 19:39:48] MarcCP: ho's that sound?
[2007.08.15 19:39:55] SaraCP: yes that's a great idea

[2007.08.15 19:41:38] Michigal: chat ...or workshop?

[2007.08.15 19:42:11] Michigal: workshop is MUCH better, I have been hoping for one for two years at least...that would be great
[2007.08.15 19:42:13] Sophie: what if we had one that we were told would be on the press page, but someone forgot to post it there? It's a pretty big mention, IMHO, of course, but can we send older ones?
[2007.08.15 19:42:13] MarcCP: send it along, we dont usually go back, but I'd be happy to have a look

[2007.08.15 19:44:11] jean / rotem gear: is the CP "About Us" page getting many visits from media, as far as you can tell? And how many of those find stories on individual SKs rather than CP as a company?
[2007.08.15 19:44:11] MarcCP: its hard to say exactly who visits these pages, but yes - it is vsited regularly. Some SK press comes from here. Also, I think one of the benefits is letting Sara and I know is that we canhear your story and remember SK when opportunities come up
[2007.08.15 19:44:18] Andrei Monkey Theatre: How can I make the images be more visible on my front page. Or this is not available for the basic shops? My shop is monkeytheatre
[2007.08.15 19:44:19] BrittaCP: that's a good question Andrei... i would actually recommend posting that on our Community Forums where you can get peer-to-peer support from other shopkeepers. or you can hang around after this chat and ask the other SK's
[2007.08.15 19:44:22] little milky shop: that would be great, marc

[2007.08.15 19:45:39] BrittaCP: No, we don't. But we can look into setting that up in the PR forum
[2007.08.15 19:45:42] Andrei Monkey Theatre: thanks
[2007.08.15 19:45:54] shopa: after the chat if you leave amnd come back you can go into the lobby and we will help you andrei
[2007.08.15 19:45:59] MarcCP: also, if you have ideas for other chats or workshops now is a good time to mention them

[2007.08.15 19:46:36] Michigal: If other shopkeepers are like me, the difficulty with press releases comes from not knowing what is "newsworthy". Separating the "here's a plug for my store" from "being newsworthy" is difficult. For me anyway. I'd love a workshop that looks into that a bit.
[2007.08.15 19:46:36] MarcCP: lets also plan a newsworthy workshop
[2007.08.15 19:46:48] Andrei Monkey Theatre: yeeey
[2007.08.15 19:47:12] MarcCP: it can be hard - and I'd love to talk about it - britta, can we schedule one of those too?

[2007.08.15 19:51:06] shopa: yeah i am not really sure what is newsworthy - i mean i add a new section and a few hundred designs a week - so what may be newsworthy from someone else - is everyday for me
[2007.08.15 19:51:06] MarcCP: right - have a look at http://www.cafepress.com/cp/learn/pr_newsworthiness
[2007.08.15 19:51:40] jean / rotem gear: its hard for me too -- when it's for myself! lol, but often an outsider can see something fresh in someone else's products and hook it into a newsworthy story.
[2007.08.15 19:51:40] MarcCP: you're right - getting insight from others helps a lot

[2007.08.15 19:52:07] MarcCP: ther's no limit, but we're unlikely to most more than on per SK per month
[2007.08.15 19:52:14] shopa: do jean maybe we should trade and write about each otehrs shops LOL

[2007.08.15 19:54:40] Blonde Designs: well i am not very good at blogging for goodness sake, i think i'd need pointers to do this!
